Bright crocuses are among the first to bloom their delicate buds in the spring garden. Their flower beds are full of white, yellow, blue, blue, purple petals for one and a half to two weeks. What is needed in order for this riot of colors to take place, and under what conditions will they again flaunt on the flowerbed next year?
Landing features
Crocuses are bulbous plants. And unlike some of their other counterparts, depending on the variety, they are able to bloom not only in spring, but also in autumn. So that they flaunt in the flowerbed in spring, planting is carried out from September to October. For those who did not manage to do this last year, you can still plant autumn varieties. This is done from July to August.
Before planting, the beds are filled with nitrogenous compounds. From organic fertilizers, these flowers are like manure, humus.
The planting of the bulbs is carried out at a depth equal to approximately the height of the three bulbs. But this business has its own subtleties. Planting depth should depend on the type of soil in your area:
• If the soil is heavy, clayey, then the planting material is not buried below 5 cm.
• On light sandy soils, too, one should not be carried away by great depths, because here the bulb can itself go into the ground below what it should be. In this case, the recommended depth is about 8 cm.
• On good fertile soil of high-quality texture, the optimum depth is 10 cm.
To prevent the bulb from drowning in the ground, you can use special plastic baskets for planting. The holes in these baskets will not interfere with the supply of nutrients with top dressing, but the trellised bottom will prevent the bulb from sinking deep into the ground. And with the advent of the time to dig up crocuses from the garden, not a single onion will get lost in the ground, but will be carefully preserved in a basket.
With a certain skill, such a sieve can be made with your own hands from a 5-liter plastic bottle. To do this, it is cut off to a third of the height, and holes are made in the bottom and on the walls. To make it more convenient to work, and the plastic does not break, the first cut is made with a hot blade.
Do not make a thick planting, leave at least 5-7 cm between them. Crocuses very soon form babies, and most of them even bloom right away. Each plant produces up to 5 young bulbs.
Crocus care in the garden
Crocus feeding is carried out three times in spring. For this, potassium-phosphorus compositions are used. The first fertilization of crocuses is started in early spring, when they just show their sprouts above the ground. The second time feeding is done in the budding phase. The third time is fertilized after the crocuses have faded - this is important for the plant bulb. Despite the fact that the flower is gone, the crocus continues its development and accumulates nutrients in the planting material for future reproduction.
In July, the foliage will completely dry out, and after that they begin to dig up the bulbs from the garden. If you do not use baskets for planting, so that the location of the crocuses does not get lost in the flowerbed while the plants are blooming, set a marker for yourself, where the number of bulbs and the variety will be indicated. It is best to make them out of plastic, and apply the data with a black marker and glue it with transparent tape so that it does not get wet and washed off during the rains. Later, this will greatly facilitate the planning of plantings in the flowerbed both in summer and in autumn.
Crocuses have fallen in love with many flower growers not only for their high decorative data, but also for the fact that they are highly resistant to various diseases. However, it is not always possible to protect the bulb from insect damage. Such planting material is discarded.
