Nasturtium is a flower that can decorate even the most boring and dull backyard area. However, in order for such a culture to please the owner and guests of the site with its decorative appearance, it is necessary to carry out correct and timely care for it

If you do not follow the simplest rules or make mistakes when growing nasturtium, then you should not be surprised that the flower will become lethargic and wilted. Luxurious and beautiful flowering can only be achieved through regular watering, dressing and other procedures.

Nasturtium also has another name - capuchin. This flower includes about a hundred different species. There are even more varieties of this culture. It is believed that such a flower came to our region from the southern and central American continent. In those places, nasturtium grows as a perennial crop. However, in Russia, nasturtium is an annual flower.

Large nasturtium is the most popular species among all the capuchin brethren. It was she who was taken as a basis for the breeding of various hybrids. The appearance of nasturtium is characterized by the presence of bright and large-sized flowers, resembling a gramophone in their shape. Each flower contains five petals. They are cut to the base of the inflorescence. The leaves are rounded and the bright green stems are erect and dense in structure. In height, they can reach from two to eight tens of centimeters. Creeping nasturtiums are up to two and a half meters long.

This flower has a lot of species - climbing, dwarf, terry and others. Popular varieties are such nasturtiums as Alaska, Yeti, Canary, Cherry rose. The colors of the leaves and other components of the culture depend on the variety. The inflorescences themselves can be cream, yellow, coral, and in other shades. The advantage of nasturtium lies not only in its decorative function. This plant is often planted as a medicinal and edible crop.

In the garden, nasturtium really has a luxurious appearance, especially during the flowering period. But it also brings a lot of benefits to the whole garden. For example, many harmful insects do not like the smell of the leaves of this flower, and vice versa, it attracts beneficial living organisms. Loves nasturtium aphid very much. Therefore, many summer residents use such a trick as planting a flower next to valuable plants that it is undesirable to damage by these insects. Removing aphids from nasturtium is easy. For this purpose, the stem is cut and then burned. It is generally recommended to plant this flower next to potatoes, legumes and pumpkin. The flower contains a large amount of vitamin C, carotene, oils and minerals. Some people consume elements such as nasturtium leaves and flowers.

How is nasturtium planted and propagated?

Typically, nasturtium is grown by seed. However, there is the possibility of other propagation methods - for example, cuttings, due to which the complex coloring of the plant and the terry texture of the petals are preserved. The flower is planted either as seedlings or immediately in open flower beds.

As for planting nasturtium in the open air immediately, the period of such a procedure falls on the month of May, preferably its end, in order to exclude the risk of nighttime drops in air temperature. Cold weather, even at zero to five degrees, will cause the plant to die. Nasturtium planting material must be placed in a hole up to two centimeters deep. It is recommended to put two or three seeds in one hole. In such a situation, the bush is guaranteed to be dense, and there will be no risk of dissimilarity. It is important to maintain a distance of twenty-five centimeters between the pits. If nasturtium is planted in an area where the weather can be unexpected in spring, then water the soil with hot water before planting. From above, the area will need to be sprinkled with straw and covered with film material. It is necessary to remove the film only at the beginning of summer, as soon as the warm weather stabilizes.

If you plan to plant nasturtium using seedlings, then here you need to sow two or three seeds in a bag of peat. Planting depth - two centimeters. The room temperature should be at least twenty degrees. It is also important to maintain good soil moisture. The first shoots will appear after two weeks. At this point, you can start growing flowers at a temperature of eighteen degrees. It is definitely worth taking care of good lighting for the seedlings so that the plant is always in good shape.
