Multicolored cornflowers

Russian cornflowers, sung by Russian poets, covering endless meadows and fields with a solid elegant carpet, littering vegetable beds of gardeners, are associated with the color of the sky, blue beloved eyes. But, tireless breeders gave the world cornflowers and other colors, domesticated them and handed them over to caring summer residents to decorate flower beds and front gardens

Rod Cornflower

The amazing Astrov family has a numerous genus called "Cornflower". This genus has half a thousand species with different life cycle lengths. Among them there are annuals, biennials and perennials. Regardless, all cornflowers bloom during the summer. From the general row, only the blue cornflower stands out, which blooms in spring.

The cornflower inflorescence is designed by nature according to the same "drawing" with other relatives. The inflorescence basket consists of two types of flowers:

• Funnel-shaped marginal petals, which, depending on the variety, are colored white, blue, purple, blue, pink or yellow.

• Tubular median flowers, colored to match the marginal petals.

Garden forms and varieties

Garden forms and varieties of cornflowers can be conditionally divided into two groups, taking the height of the stem as a basis for dividing.

Tall species (with a height of 60 to 80 cm) are grown for cutting, decorating them with flower bouquets.

Plants with a stem height of 15 to 30 centimeters are referred to the "low" group. They are used in flower gardens, to create flower borders, for growing in pots.

Popular types of cornflowers

Blue cornflower (Centaurea cyanus) - the most familiar annual cornflower grows up to 50-80 centimeters in height. Its abundantly branching bush is covered with rather large (5-8 cm in diameter) inflorescences-baskets, painted in blue in the original species, and in white, pink, red and purple colors in garden forms.

Growing

Cornflowers are very unpretentious, cold-resistant, but they love sunny places. They do not bloom profusely in partial shade. They are planted in early spring or autumn. Annual seeds are sown outdoors in September or early spring. With dense seedlings, thinning is done.

The soil is needed for them loose, fertile, with good drainage, since stagnation of water is contraindicated for them. Watering plants in containers in spring should be regular, and the water should not be too cold. In the summer, watered in the early morning during the dry season.

To maintain the appearance, remove faded inflorescences and dry leaves.

Cornflowers can be attacked by fungi.
