Blixa Ober - a marvelous beauty

Blixa Obera settled in nature in the reservoirs of New Guinea, Australia, Madagascar, India, Japan, as well as in a number of other places on our vast planet. Most often, it grows in marshy areas, rice fields, near streams with a slight current and along small lakes. The delicate Aubert blix is also excellent for keeping in aquariums, making their design more aesthetic and elegant

Getting to know the plant

Blixa Ober is an aquatic annual, reaching a height of 10 - 25 cm and endowed with erect rhizomes, on which fancy leaves gather in spectacular rosettes. The leaf blades of this aquatic inhabitant are soft and brittle, as well as linear and sessile, equipped with elongated-narrowed tops and colored light green. In length they reach sixty-five centimeters, and in width - only half a centimeter. The central veins of the fragile annual are quite clearly visible, and the lateral veins are parallel.

Ober's blixes covering leaves do not swell and do not open. Its single bisexual flowers are equipped with three stamens and rather long pedicels. However, this beauty blooms only in favorable conditions. Moreover, flowers can bloom both above water and under water. The second is possible in the case of a sufficiently high water level in the reservoir.

The fruits of the Auber blix are elongated capsules containing a huge number of ellipsoidal seeds.

How to grow

It is best to keep this amazingly beautiful algae in soft water or in water of medium hardness (ranging from one to ten degrees). In this case, an active reaction should be acidic (5, 5 - 7, 2), and the temperature regime should be in the range from twenty to twenty-eight degrees. The fragile beauty grows equally well in moderately warm aquariums and in tropical ones. And it adapts to new conditions rather quickly.

Since Blixa Auber loves good lighting and space, you should take care of both. The light sources should be quite powerful, and the aquariums should have enough space, since the fragile aquatic beauty cannot stand tightness. Daylight hours for this annual are provided within eight to ten hours. And fluorescent lamps for additional lighting are selected at the rate of 0.5 - 0.7 W for each liter of water. The height of the aquariums must also be taken into account.

In order to grow strong and healthy specimens of Auber's blix, the soil should be selected as enriched with all kinds of nutrients as much as possible. Silicate sand or fine gravel is suitable as a soil. If you choose the soil correctly, Aubert's blix will grow beautiful and strong, and on each of its bush there will be from fifty to one hundred leaves. An excellently fragile plant also accepts top dressing - both liquid and root. Often, small clay balls are placed in the soil for feeding. You can also add an activated carbon tablet. And the introduction of iron preparations in high doses can provoke reddening of the leaves.

It is strongly not recommended to keep Ober's blix in aquariums in which herbivorous fish live, since individuals with high activity can severely damage an amazing plant, nibbling its fragile leaves from all sides.

As for the reproduction of Aubert's blix, it is capable of multiplying by seeds even under water (this plant is cleistogamous). She lives for a relatively short time, so she should be periodically multiplied. Usually, the seeds formed as a result of ripening of fruits are more than enough for the reproduction of a fragile aquatic beauty. Can be propagated by Blix Auber and dividing rhizomes. For this, the main bush is divided into two or three, subsequently planting them in the ground as separate plants. If Auber's blix is not propagated, then this wonderful annual can degenerate very quickly, so special attention should be paid to the issues of its reproduction.
