Swimming Ricciocarpus is easy to see in water bodies in various parts of our vast planet. It grows equally well in the Far East and Western Siberia, as well as in Central Asia and the Caucasus. This unusual floating moss forms incredibly delicate openwork thickets on the water surface. It looks no less impressive in aquariums, combining perfectly with almost any green aquarium pets. However, it is not often possible to find ricciocarpus floating in home aquariums, since it is a rather rare plant, moreover, it is even believed that it is endangered. So getting this aquatic beauty is a great success
Getting to know the plant
Floating Ricciocarpus is an incredibly colorful floating moss that is closely related to Riccia. The tops of this marvelous plant are always dry and airy. Its height reaches 1 cm and its width is about 2 cm.
In general, this amazing moss is a thallus, that is, an accumulation of heart-shaped bright green plates. Inside such plates, tiny triangular buds are formed, which are subsequently transformed into new young plants. On the upper sides of the thallus, rather deep median grooves can be seen, and below the floating Ricciocarpus has numerous purple scales, which in their appearance vaguely resemble roots. The leaflets of wonderful moss can be either heart-shaped or oval, with slightly pointed tips.
Also, unusual thallus are endowed with aerial cameras, thanks to which a wonderful plant is able to stay on the surface, since they provide buoyancy not only for fancy leaves, but for the entire plant as a whole.
Thickets of swimming Ricciocarpus are actively used by some species of fish for spawning. This funny moss is also used to shade other green aquarium pets.
It is especially common to find wonderful moss in warm and temperate climatic zones. It grows best on sphagnum bogs and watered alder forests. It is noteworthy that floating Ricciocarpus also adorns the territory of the State Memorial and Natural Reserve, which bears the name known to many - "Museum-Estate of Leo Tolstoy" Yasnaya Polyana ".
How to grow
It is best to grow unpretentious floating ricciocarpus in paludariums, as it loves humid air very much. If it is planned to keep it in an aquarium, then it is recommended to cover the vessel from above with glass.
The most suitable temperature for the comfort of a Ricciocarpus floating is a temperature from twenty-two to twenty-six degrees. An active reaction of the aquatic environment is suitable in the region of 7, and the hardness of the water is in the range of 8 - 10 degrees.
Every week, the wondrous moss needs to change the water (by about one-fifth of the volume). It is not necessary to use various dressings in this case. The composition of the soil does not matter to him.
Since this marvelous moss is very photophilous, the lighting of the aquarium must be bright (at least 0.7 W / l), and its daylight hours should be, on average, twelve to fourteen hours a day. The use of incandescent lamps is considered impractical, since they heat the aqueous medium locally, and such heating is extremely undesirable for a floating Ricciocarpus, as it can cause its death. So when organizing artificial lighting, it is better to stop the choice on fluorescent lamps.
Luxurious floating moss reproduces vegetatively, by dividing its picturesque thallus. The growth rate of this aquatic beauty is quite high, so it is able to please with new plants in the shortest possible time.
