Swimming krinum is quite widespread in West African waters. Especially often it can be seen in tropical forest streams and in fast-flowing rivers. The amazingly beautiful flowers of this aquatic inhabitant look amazing on the water surface. In addition, this handsome man is great for keeping in aquariums. The decorativeness of the floating krinum is so high that it will certainly become an adornment of any aquarium

Getting to know the plant

Floating krinum is a rather powerful plant, endowed with round-shaped bulbs reaching 4.5 cm in thickness. The stalks of the wonderful representative of the Amaryllis family are rather short, and its curly flat ribbon-shaped leaves are colored dark green and equipped with irregularly crenate edges. All leaves have pronounced central veins and form rather bizarre rosettes. One adult specimen usually has twenty to twenty-five leaves. In length, they often grow up to one hundred and forty centimeters, and in width - up to five.

Both the shape of the leaves and their width, depending on the conditions of keeping this aquatic beauty, can vary significantly.

The peduncles of the floating krinum are straight and grow in length up to seventy centimeters, and its luxurious umbrella-shaped inflorescences are formed by five flowers with a surprisingly pleasant aroma. There are small green tubules near the perianths, and the length of the bracts reaches three and a half centimeters. Each flower has six stamens and one longer pistil. By the way, floating krinum flowers can be either white or red.

How to grow

Due to the fact that the leaves of the floating krinum are ribbon-shaped, to contain this aquatic inhabitant, a sufficiently capacious vessel is required so that luxurious leaves can freely float on the water surface.

An active reaction of water for growing a wonderful aquatic beauty is desirable to be neutral, and an aquatic environment is most preferable to a soft or medium hardness. And the best temperature is considered to be the range from twenty-two to twenty-eight degrees.

An important role for the comfortable existence of a floating krinum is played by good water circulation, therefore, it should be taken care of with special care, because in nature this handsome man mainly lives in rivers with a fast flow. Filtration should be no less powerful. And it is quite enough to make a water change three to four times a month - at the same time, about a quarter of the total volume is updated. The proper development of the swimming krinum is promoted by oxygen-enriched water.

As for the soil, its thickness should be in accordance with the size of the bulbs - as a rule, on average, it is equal to ten centimeters. And the soil for growing floating krinum is suitable for rough, only it must in any case be enriched with various nutrients in sufficient quantities. In this case, it is allowed to use gravel or sand as a soil.

Floating crinum needs bright lighting, and its daylight hours should be at least twelve hours.

A wonderful green pet reproduces vegetatively - daughter bulbs periodically form on large maternal specimens. It is recommended to separate subsidiary plants only after about five leaves are formed on them. The bulbs are planted in the ground, burying them into it by about 2/3.

In principle, generative reproduction of this aquatic beauty is also possible - its seeds germinate rather quickly, giving strong young plants. In just ten weeks, the seed-propagated floating krinum is capable of producing new plants reaching fifteen centimeters in height.

It is recommended to plant floating krinum in aquariums separately from other aquatic beauties. In general, it is very unpretentious in care and is not eaten by herbivorous fish at all.
