Aponogeton lives in swampy areas, as well as in ditches and ponds. Also, due to its excellent decorative properties, it copes very successfully with the role of a picturesque aquarium inhabitant. All connoisseurs of beauty should definitely pay attention to this beautiful aquatic man and get to know him better
Getting to know the plant
This extraordinary aquatic inhabitant, representing the Aponogetone family, is characterized by oval and translucent leaves of pleasant to the eye light green shades with fancy corrugated edges. These narrowed upward leaves are located on rather long petioles growing from tuberous rhizomes. Their width reaches four centimeters, and their length is twenty-five. However, under very favorable living conditions, the length of aponogeton leaves can be equal to seventy centimeters.
Aponogeton grown in rather small reservoirs, no matter how favorable the conditions, will be of a very small height, but this still does not affect its magnificent appearance. This aquatic beauty looks most attractive at the very end of summer, as well as in the autumn season.
In nature, the wonderful aponogeton pleases with its exquisite flowering, usually at the end of summer, but in aquariums it blooms extremely rarely, and it often happens in winter. The flowers of this plant are usually pinkish, have a very pleasant smell and a rather peculiar fork-like shape.
How to grow
In order for the aponogeton to grow well, it will need excellent bright lighting - a rather long absence of such has a very detrimental effect on the development of this wavy handsome. Ideally, the water should be soft, with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction, and its temperature should always vary from 22 to 28 degrees: in colder water, plant growth will slow down decently, and it may even begin to shed leaves. Nevertheless, even under such unfavorable circumstances, the nodules of aponogeton preserved in the soil will be able to recover if they are again provided with proper conditions.
It is best to take nutritious soil for growing graceful aponogeton and make sure that there is enough silt in it. However, too much silt is also useless - this can lead to decay of the root system. Adding peat or excellent clay to the soil will also do a good job. And as a substrate, small pebbles or coarse sand are best suited. For young vegetation, the soil layer should be at least three centimeters, and for more mature vegetation, it is increased by another five centimeters.
In aquariums, this amazing aquatic creature reproduces vegetatively, forming approximately seven daughter plants during each growing season. Arrows reaching the surface grow on the mother plants. At the tops of these arrows, small nodules form, from which, after some time, new leaves will begin to appear. Further, the nodules will gradually increase, turning into medium-sized tubers. Here they are separated from the mother plants, so that they can then be individually planted in a prepared soil. And the root system of such processes forms quickly. Thanks to such an interesting feature, aponogeton is called viviparous.
In general, various species of this aquatic plant can reproduce in several ways: both by daughter plants forming on rhizomes or flower arrows, and by the division of tubers or rhizomes, which is customary for many, as well as by seeds. For the reproduction of the bizarre aponogeton by dividing the tubers and rhizomes, it is necessary to choose well-developed healthy plants. All rhizomes are divided into three to four parts with a sharp razor blade, while trying to maintain growth points on each piece, after which it is necessary to rub charcoal powder into the sections so that decay does not occur after planting. The planted parts of tubers from dormant buds will soon give long-awaited young plants.
The bizarre aponogeton grown in aquariums will need a solid amount of all kinds of organic substances for full development. In this regard, it is advisable not to remove fish excrement from the aquarium soil for as long as possible.
When growing a beautiful aponogeton aquarium, it is advised to place it on a serving as an excellent background in the background.
