Luxurious anemopsis

Anemopsis is used to decorate the shores of small reservoirs, because it goes well with many other plants. Translated from Spanish, its name sounds like "calm herb". On the territory of Russia, such an interesting and very effective plant is, unfortunately, not very common

Getting to know the plant

Anemopsis is a perennial native to North America, the height of which is up to 60 cm. It is a representative of the genus Savrurah. The plant is endowed with thick rhizomes and oblong leaves collected in the lower parts of the stems. Its numerous creeping roots grow at incredible speed. On the leafless stems of a luxurious plant there are very peculiar inflorescences: small flowers, each of which is equipped with a white and perfectly visible small bracts, fold into a dense cob, and at the bases of the inflorescences themselves there are large bracts (usually there are four of them). Handsome anemopsis forms very picturesque clumps.

Anemopsis blooms from May to June. In the wild, it usually grows near lakes and other bodies of water.

There is only one representative of this plant, called Californian anemopsis. Currently, this luxurious flower is on the verge of extinction.

Properties of anemopsis

The indigenous people of America used anemopsis to heal all kinds of diseases - from toothaches, colds and coughs to the most complex infections of the genitourinary system and intestinal problems. Unfortunately, it is not used in modern medicine, since it turned out that tinctures and oil solutions prepared from it have certain side effects. For this reason, anemopsis was excluded from the list of medicines, and it is categorically not recommended to use it alone. It should be mentioned that even mystical properties were once attributed to this wonderful plant.

How to grow

It is necessary to grow anemopsis in areas with good and sufficient lighting. It is planted in rather spacious wide containers or immediately in moist fertile soil on the shore. Light soils and loams are best suited for it. The soil must necessarily be rich in nutrients - the initial fertilization of the earth with the most common humus or mineral fertilizers will help to make it so.

Drained flower beds are also a good place to grow a beautiful plant. Anemopsis can also grow on stones if the area is well lit by the sun.

Anemopsis propagates both by seeds and by dividing rhizomes. Seeds should be planted in the fall and are best done in cool rooms. In order to prevent the growth of anemopsis, trays or baskets are used. With the onset of spring, the seedlings that have emerged from the seeds are planted in a place previously prepared for them. Dividing the bushes to propagate anemopsis turns out to be somewhat faster - for this, in early spring or autumn, the bushes are divided into parts (quite a medium size) and transplanted to other places. It is important to know that the plant can adapt to new areas for a long time, and it will bloom only next year, not earlier.

Anemopsis does not need special care, but periodically it is necessary to limit the spread of this beautiful plant and water it constantly, if it does not grow near a reservoir, so that this handsome man does not wither. Sometimes it is necessary to enrich the land with fertilizers (a couple of times a year) and loosen it. You also need to get rid of weeds as they appear. Anemopsis is usually not susceptible to pests and diseases.

As for wintering, in central Russia, anemopsis winters quite unstably and can even freeze out in severe winters. In the north, the plant can be removed to the cellar for wintering, and in the south, it easily overwinters in the ground.
