Just imagine, it's New Year's in the yard, and snowdrops have blossomed in your pot. And on the eve of the main women's holiday, tulips bloomed on the windowsill. Isn't it a winter-spring fairy tale? In the meantime, in winter, it is quite possible to do forcing bulbous flowers at home
Where do we start?
We select a variety of bulbous plants for forcing bulbs. In tulips, pay attention to the height of the future plant. It is better that it be compact, medium. Among daffodil plants, opt for multi-flowered plants, as they will bloom for you longer.
We buy bulbs in the store. To the touch, they should be elastic, strong, not sluggish, not wrinkled, not soaked in the package, God forbid. If sprouts appear on the bulbs, they should not be rotten. The larger the bulbs in their variety, the better.
Now it's up to the agronomic process of forcing the bulbous. It is not difficult. But it is not as simple as it seems to many. Say, what is there to think for a long time? We stuck the onion into the ground, watered it and wait, sir. No, without preliminary cold hardening of flower bulbs, alas, they will not give.
That is, for the successful forcing of the bulbs, they need to be kept at a temperature of about plus 8-9 degrees, not higher. Moreover, each bulbous plant has its own seed cooling period. We will tell you about these terms, but keep in mind that if you provided the temperature to the bulbs higher than 8 degrees, for example, plus 10, then the cooling period of the bulbs should be extended by 1-2 weeks. If you were able to lower it to plus 3-5 degrees, then you can also reduce this period by one to two weeks. When cooled, the bulbs should be kept in a dark paper bag, without access to light, so that biological forces will be activated in them.
Each bulb has its own term
For forcing bulbs, you can store them in the refrigerator in a dry form, or you can plant them in the ground and put a container with them on a cold veranda, in a cellar, in a greenhouse. That is, where you can provide a constant cool temperature for the bulbs.
As promised, here are the cooling times for the various bulbs and forcing them this way. The temperature regime is offered plus 8-9 degrees for all crops. Necessary:
• tulips - 13-20 weeks
• daffodils 16-18
• hyacinths 12-16
• Pushkinia 12-14
• snowdrop 15-16
And the same crops will bloom after exposing them to light when the temperature rises to + 11-15 ° С:
• tulips and daffodils after three to four weeks
• hyacinths in one to two weeks
• Pushkinia in seven to ten weeks
• snowdrops in ten to twelve weeks
Under the sun's rays
After the cooling procedure, the time comes for the seedling to emerge at the tip of each bulb from its center. As soon as you notice this condition of the bulbs, you urgently need to rearrange them under light, sunlight or create them artificially.
The air temperature in the room where the bulbous crops are located now needs to be raised to plus 15 degrees Celsius. It should not be raised immediately until 20-24, the plant should adapt after the cold. Everything should be like in nature. Raise the temperature gradually, paying attention to watering. It must be done every day from now on. In order for the plant to absorb as much moisture as it needs, pour water into the tray in which it stands. Soon! Buds and first flowers will appear very soon.
If you want exactly for the holiday
Consider an example when there is a desire to achieve flowering tulips on March 8th. In this case, their bulbs need to be cooled from about October 1. If you missed this important point, then purchase already chilled plants from garden stores and flower growers, which are sold in November and December.
Such bulbs do not have a pompous appearance. But this is not scary, but only you will get their beautiful flowering. Cover such bulbs so that they do not freeze on the way, bring them home, plant them in the ground and place containers with them on a light windowsill. Just a little attention to culture and a bouquet of beautiful tulips will shine by the month of March, as if ordered.
