Family Amaryllidaceae

Plants of this glorious family made friends with humans long before the birth of Jesus Christ, but became full members of European gardens only from the 16th century AD. Among them there are plants for human consumption - onions; growing in open ground - handsome daffodil and snow-white snowdrop; but we will talk about those who settled in our homes, pharmacies, offices, banks and other institutions

Originally from warm countries

Many representatives of this family have become habitual indoor plants for us, as if they were not exotic and mysterious novelties brought from fabulous overseas countries with eternal summer.

Due to their unpretentiousness and endurance, they not only do not die on our windowsills when the winter cold is raging outside the window, but even manage to delight us with their flowers, while soil plants sleep soundly under a snow blanket.

In autumn or winter, "clivia" and "eucharis" give their beautiful flowers, and the hybrid "hippeastrum" can bloom at any time of the year, or bloom exactly for a certain holiday, if its owner tries a little.

Among the amaryllis there are both popular representatives and undeservedly rarely grown, for example, the unpretentious, charming and prolific "wallot"; magnificent "sprekelia", the flowers of which resemble an orchid.

Sprekelia reveals its dark red lonely flower to the world in spring, resting in autumn and winter. Its dark bulbs up to 5 centimeters in diameter produce belt-like leaves that reach 40 centimeters in length, and a leafless arrow, the height of which is 4 times less than the leaves.

The shape of the flower is more similar to orchid flowers than to their relatives in the family. The six red petals seem to share two functions: the three lower ones guard the stamens and the pistil, and the three upper ones are gracefully curved, demonstrating their magnificence.

Sprekelia care consists in watering and feeding. During the growing season, the plant needs moderate to abundant watering evenly. From September, watering is reduced, and from October to spring, sprekelia is kept in a warm (20 degrees) and dry room, without any watering.

The plant is propagated by seeds or baby bulbs.

Vallota the beautiful (Vallota purple)

Although the vallota is in a semi-dormant state in winter, its belt-like dark green leaves do not lose their color, remaining the same as in the period of active spring-summer growth.

The flowering arrow is crowned with an umbrella-shaped inflorescence, consisting of 3-10 large bright red flowers. There are varieties of vallottes with white flowers. The diameter of the flowers varies from 8 to 12 (in some species) centimeters. The height of the flowering arrow reaches 40 centimeters and rises above the longer (up to 60 cm), but drooping leaves.

During the period of active growth, which occurs in summer, the plant needs abundant watering and a well-lit location. In winter, the temperature of 5-10 degrees is more favorable for the plant. If there is no such room, you should simply move the flower pots close to the window pane. Watering in winter is reduced, slightly drying the soil, but not to such an extent that the plant shed its leaves from lack of moisture.

Considering that the vallotta has very weak roots, it is better to choose small flower pots for the plant. In a large pot, there is a risk of soil acidification, since weak roots cannot master the entire space. In addition, the soil space contributes to the formation of a large number of children, on which the plant spends its energy, not leaving them to bloom.

You can propagate the vallot by seeds, but it is much faster and more efficient to do this with the help of onion babies.
