More recently, among the rare indoor exotic plants, the rubber-bearing Ficus with large glossy leaves reigned. For some twenty or thirty years, the range of proposals of horticultural centers for exoticism has expanded so much that simply the eyes run up from the many-sided beauty. Among this abundance, a tropical shrub with the name "Schefflera" stands out for its large, beautiful foliage
Schaeffler's family
It is not always convenient to have famous namesakes. Guess then, whether the plant was named after you, or after your namesake from another country. This happened with the tropical plant Scheffler, in the name of which is immortalized, not the name of a German botanist, not the name of a Polish scientist with a one-sounding surname, but different names. their descendants were not offended. And the plant, most likely, does not make any difference.
Botanists have combined about two hundred species of evergreen shrubs and trees into this genus, belonging to the Aralievye family. Among the representatives of the family there is the world famous "Root of Life" - a plant called Ginseng, preparations from which prolong the youth and life of a person. Although plants of the Schefflera genus do not possess the magical properties of their relative, some species look very decorative, and therefore have received the attention of flower growers.
Cultivated varieties
* Schefflera eight-leaf (8-leafed) (Schefflera octophylla) is a common cultivated species that is used in various flower arrangements or individually. Its leaves look like disheveled umbrellas of eight pieces. This shape of the leaf helps the plant withstand tropical downpours, water jets roll freely over them, without causing damage to the plant.
* Schefflera tree (Schefflera arboricola) - in the tropics, this species is represented by shrubs or vines. In culture, the plant hardly branches, and therefore fits well into the interior of the premises. Leaves of this species can have a very different appearance, be cut, or have white or yellow decorative spots on the surface.
* Schefflera radiant (Schefflera actinophylla) is a shrub that grows in nature up to 12 meters in height. Indoors, he behaves more modestly, rising up to a maximum of 2.5 meters. Its complex, large, beautiful leaves consist of leathery oval-oblong leaves with a glossy surface. By the way, the gloss and leatheriness of the leaves of tropical plants is a protective function formed over millions of years of their life on the planet. It blooms in spike-shaped inflorescences of small red flowers, rarely showing them in captivity.
* Schefflera finger (Schefflera digitata) - differs in complex leaves, often variegated, as well as greenish flowers and dark fruit-berries.
Growing
Shefflera needs diffused light, like in tropical thickets; good quality garden land in the company of peat and sand (in a ratio of 2: 1: 1).
For watering, it is necessary to choose the "golden mean" by trial and error, so as not to flood the plant with excess moisture and prevent the soil from drying out. It is important to moisturize not only the soil in the flowerpot, but also the surrounding air to make the plant feel at home in the tropics. In spring and summer, watering is combined with fertilizing.
The plant does not like high temperatures, in summer the plus limit is desirable at 26 degrees, in winter not lower than 16 degrees.
In the spring, the shrubs are provided with a container larger than the previous one, filling it with the same fertilized soil.
Reproduction
You can propagate by sowing seeds, semi-lignified cuttings, or you can purchase a healthy plant without signs of the presence of pests on it in garden centers.
Enemies
Shefflera has many enemies. Beauty loves to annoy aphids, ticks, worms and microscopic fungi.
