What is considered a fruit? This is a ribbed achene compressed from the sides; drugs are made on the basis of the seeds of this plant. The drug, which is produced on the basis of Ammi majus L., is called ammifurin. It contains furocoumarins. Ammifurin is used in the treatment of vitiligo, psoriasis, and leukoderma. The drug also has an excellent effect for treating the scalp, stimulating hair growth in the affected areas. Despite its miraculous effect in relation to some diseases, Ammi large extract cannot be used by those who have problems with the kidneys and liver, and cannot be treated with it during pregnancy.
Ammi large is an unpretentious plant, for the habitat of which dry soil is suitable. This plant is not afraid of the sun or hot winds. Crimean dry slopes, southern soils of Ukraine, mountainous slopes of the Caucasus, Krasnodar steppes, semi-deserts of North Africa are his usual habitat. In the origin of the name Ammi, there is a reference to the Greek ammos, which means sand. Ammi can be found not only in the wild, but it is also cultivated for the production of pharmaceuticals.
Ammi big is confused with other well-known to us umbrella - with Hogweed. Outwardly, they are similar, slightly differ only in the structure of the leaves, the power of the stem, height and habitat halo. The hogweed is very tall and reaches two and a half meters. It grows in a more temperate and even harsh climate, for example, in Western Siberia, in the countries of Scandinavia, the Baltic states. Hogweed is considered a weed. Under the sun, if the juice gets on the skin, it can cause phytophotodermatitis in humans and animals. And if the furocoumarins, which are contained in the fruits of Ammi, are for the benefit of humans, then the cow parsnip is used as silage for livestock feed. In Europe, the cow parsnip is fought as a dangerous weed that creates impenetrable thickets that interfere with the growth and cultivation of other useful plants.
There is another useful Ammi from the umbrella family - Ammi visnaga. Ammi visnaga has the common name Visnaga. An interesting fact is that when a plant bears fruit, its umbrellas become hard, and they were once used to make toothpicks. Apparently, for this plant and received the name "dental".
Ammi dental is also a biennial plant, growing slightly lower than Ammi large: it can reach a meter in height. In appearance, these plants can be confused, they are so similar. In Ammi, the dental inflorescences form a spherical shape. Ammi dental also loves a warm climate, the geography of distribution of this plant is also wide: the Mediterranean, North Africa, Eastern Europe plus some countries of the Middle and Far East, there is a lot of it in Azerbaijan. The fruits of Ammi dental contain kellin - a substance on the basis of which various medicines are made used in the treatment of blood vessels, heart, glaucoma, bronchi, cough, sore throat, gastrointestinal tract. The most famous medicine for Dental Ammi is Avisan, an antispasmodic for kidney stones.
The fruits of Ammi large and toothy are harvested at the end of August or in September, when the umbrellas turn brown, which means that the fruits (seeds) are ripe. For medicines, not only the fruits of the plant are suitable, but also the stalks, the rays of the umbrellas and parts of the stems. Plants are threshed with harvesters.
Ammi large and Ammi dental, if desired, can be grown in fields and garden plots. It is necessary to prepare the soil for it: to plow, to clear the roots of other plants. The soil should be free of weeds, and it is desirable that medicinal plants (for example, chamomile), fodder crops, and some of the early vegetables have already been grown on this soil. Ammi seeds large and toothed can be sown in autumn, and in the south even in the first month of a warm winter.
In folk medicine, for a long time, the healing agents Ammi dental have been known, therefore, tea is made from it (they drink it for sore throat, cough), decoctions, tinctures for the kidneys and intestines.
Cute Ammi umbrellas with small snow-white (sometimes pearl, yellowish) flowers always attract the eye. Some florists include Ammi inflorescences in flower arrangements, they look original and natural. The only negative is the pungent smell of Ammi flowers, which is not pleasant to everyone.
