Lizikhiton Kamchatka, outwardly reminiscent of calla and calla lilies, grows mainly in well-humid shady places in flooded meadows, along forest oxbows and near streams. The large white blankets of this plant that stand out sharply and surrounding bizarre inflorescences-cobs look incredibly impressive. And the green glossy leaves growing a little later after the inflorescences make this handsome man even more decorative. In nature, Kamchatka lysichiton can be found in Japan, as well as in the Far East, Kamchatka and Sakhalin
Getting to know the plant
Lizikhiton Kamchatka represents the Aroid family. This is a herbaceous perennial endowed with short thick rhizomes. Its oval bright green large leaves are collected in funny rosettes. By the end of summer, such rosettes acquire a particularly spectacular appearance, and their length often reaches one and a half meters. Sometimes Kamchatka lysichiton grows up to two meters in height, but in central Russia its height often does not exceed 50 - 70 cm. And the plant growing on turfed areas is often smaller.
The width of the luxurious white bedspreads of Kamchatka lysichiton, under favorable conditions, is 13-16 cm, and the length is 16-25 cm. Towards the middle of June, by the time the seeds ripen, the beautiful bedspreads slowly fade and subsequently disappear.
Lysichiton Kamchatka blooms in the spring, even before the regrowth of the leaves. During the flowering period, this graceful plant emits a rather strong, but at the same time very pleasant smell. However, such flowers are definitely not suitable for a home bouquet. The inflorescences of Kamchatka lysichiton are cobs 3 - 4 cm wide and 10 - 13 cm long, consisting of small flowers. The fruits of this plant ripen in June.
This aquatic beauty grows in extremely picturesque groups. Sometimes you can observe huge glades completely overgrown with this plant.
It is also important to know that the rhizomes, flowers and berries of Kamchatka lysichiton in the buds are very poisonous. They contain saponin-like substances, as well as glycosides and alkaloids. And in the leaves, alkaloids are contained in small quantities. The Kamchatka lysichiton was introduced into the culture in 1886.
How to grow
Lizikhiton Kamchatka will grow best on swampy shores, on peaty and humus-rich soils. In this case, the water level can be in the range from five to ten centimeters. The most suitable is water with high acidity. Also, for the full development of Kamchatka lysichiton, shady and semi-shady places are needed.
The rhizomes of this moisture-loving handsome man, as a rule, are first planted in baskets filled with loose peat soil, and then together with them they are placed in the ground to a depth of about ten centimeters. This measure greatly facilitates the subsequent work with Kamchatka lysichitone, since the roots of this perennial are incredibly sensitive to transplants. And in general, it is better to transplant only young plants - it is not recommended to transplant or divide old specimens.
If you provide a plant planted on fertile peat soils with abundant and regular moisture, then it can develop very well without reservoirs.
Reproduction of Kamchatka lysichiton occurs with freshly harvested seeds. It develops in the first years of life rather slowly, forming relatively small leaves and inflorescences. You can propagate this handsome man vegetatively, separating fancy daughter rosettes from its rhizomes. However, the technology of its vegetative propagation has not yet been fully developed. As a rule, the seedlings of this plant bloom only in the fourth or fifth year.
Lizikhiton Kamchatka is very winter-hardy and rather unpretentious in care. Nevertheless, it is recommended to periodically replace depleted soils, as well as spoil the beautiful plant with additional fertilizing from time to time.
In garden design, Kamchatka lisichiton looks great as a design for streams and other bodies of water.
