The stalked cabbage mosquito is a rather interesting and very small pest. Its voracious larvae very much harm cruciferous crops - the leaves attacked by them become corrugated and quickly wrinkle, and the leaf petioles noticeably bend and thicken near the bases. The apical buds of plants in most cases die off, and instead of them from the axillary buds, sometimes several tiny "coots" are formed. If, in addition to everything, a warm and humid weather sets in, then the "hearts" of cabbage will begin to rot. Petiole mosquitoes are especially dangerous for cabbage seedlings
Meet the pest
The stalked cabbage mosquito is a very small insect - its size ranges from 1.5 to 2 mm. The body of the pests is characterized by a yellowish color with a slight greenish tinge, and the transverse stripes on the abdomens and the tops of the breasts are grayish. Antennae in females reaches half the length of the body, and antennae of males noticeably exceed the length of their bodies.
The transparent and slightly bent eggs of these miniature pests are about 0.25 mm long and about 0.08 mm wide. The yellowish larvae, which grow up to 2 mm in length, are endowed with a pair of tiny antennae. Their first thoracic segments are very narrow (and sometimes even retracted inward), and on the lower sides of the breasts there is a small plate (in other words, a "spatula"), equipped with a shallow notch in the widened part. By the way, all larvae have the ability to bounce.
Pupae of petiolate mosquitoes have small spines on the rear ends of their bodies. And the formation of pupae occurs in rounded cocoons, reaching 2 mm in diameter and densely covered with tiny particles of soil.
Pests usually overwinter in the soil at the pupal stage. With the onset of spring, tiny mosquitoes fly out of the cocoons and begin to lay eggs almost immediately - they lay them, as a rule, in heaps, on average fifteen to twenty pieces each. And eggs are placed mainly in the "hearts" (apical buds) of various cruciferous crops - rapeseed, cabbage, etc.
After about four to five days, when the thermometer rises to twenty degrees, voracious larvae begin to emerge from the eggs. They concentrate mainly in the folds of young leaves and near the bases of their petioles. After a while, all the larvae pupate in the soil. Despite the fact that it was not possible to establish the exact number of generations of cabbage petiolate mosquitoes, it is believed that this pest gives at least four generations for each season.
You can meet these garden parasites not only on the cabbage apical buds - they can often be seen in the bloated ugly buds of all kinds of cruciferous crops.
How to fight
When planting seedlings, all vegetation with damaged apical buds should be carefully discarded. If it is suddenly discovered that the heads of cabbage, instead of starting to develop from the dead central bud, began to develop from the lateral ones, it is necessary for them to create the proper conditions conducive to enhanced growth - as a rule, high-quality watering and feeding are used for this purpose.
One of the most important measures to combat harmful mosquitoes is the timely disposal of weeds - these gluttonous pests quite often develop on cruciferous weeds. And with the onset of autumn, it is imperative to dig up the soil.
In the case of a particularly large number of these miniature pests, they switch to insecticide treatments. Such means as "Belofos", "Sumicidin", "Tsimbush", "Anometrin", "Talkord" and "Rovikurt" help in the fight against them well. And in the absence of those, you can use "Etaphos", "Cyanox" or "Foxim".
