Forcing tulips: correcting mistakes

Inexperienced flower growers sometimes do not immediately get such a trick as forcing bulbous flowers in winter or for the holiday of International Women's Day on March 8. Tulips, daffodils, crocuses will be planted - and as a result, disappointment, because the flower does not please with quality or did not begin to produce a peduncle at all. What should be considered and what mistakes should be avoided so as not to get upset later?

Choose early tulip varieties

The first and very common mistake is choosing the wrong variety. For winter forcing, you should take early varieties. If late tulips grow on your site, then it is better to abandon the idea of using this planting material to get a beautiful flower in winter or early spring.

In this case, when you really want to drive out the flowers yourself, you should take care of purchasing special bulbs for distillation in stores.

When size matters

The second mistake that is made when selecting planting material is the size of the bulb. She doesn't have to be young or small. For distillation, it is necessary to take a healthy large onion so that it has a sufficient supply of nutrients for the so-called winter "dash".

Don't forget the rest period

The third mistake is that it is sometimes forgotten that the bulb must undergo some preparation. Namely, to go through a period of rest, that is, cooling. Thus, we artificially repeat the natural cycle, so that after cooling, the plant, sensing the approach of heat, wakes up and sprouts.

The cooling time depends on the tulip variety. For example, early cultivars require approximately 8 weeks in the cold. In general, this period can stretch for 12-16 weeks. In this case, the temperature should be from zero to +8 degrees Celsius and not higher.

What if there is no basement? If you wish, you can even leave the onion pots in the refrigerator. But this is not an ideal solution because the refrigerator may be too humid.

Put on forcing in the fall

The fourth mistake is that it is too late to put the flowers for distillation. If you did this in December or January, then by March 8, the flowers will most likely not have time to bloom.

But it is also impossible to overexpose the onions put for forcing in the basement. It is necessary not to miss the moment when the sprouts will hatch, and be prepared to move them from a dark room to the light, so that the sprouts do not stretch out and turn green as soon as possible.

By the way, you should not put on forcing onions that have already awakened and sprouted.

Do not overmoisten, but also do not dry out

The soil for distillation must be moisture-absorbing and loose. And the container for distillation is quite voluminous. This is necessary so that after watering the moisture is retained in the pot, and it is not necessary to water the bulbs often.

If you plant in small pots, the soil will dry out faster. And the roots, moreover, will not have enough space for development. And often it is not recommended to water tulips. And instead of watering, it is better to tamp the snow into the pots.

Avoid unnecessary stress

After sprouting, the onion pots should not be moved too quickly from a cold basement to a warm environment. The temperature should be raised gradually. When the sprouts in the pot grow about 5 cm, the plants from the basement are first moved to the balcony or veranda. And only after that they are already moved to room conditions.

But even in indoor conditions, the flower should not be hot. During this period, the temperature of the content should be about 14-16 degrees Celsius.

By the way, when the buds open to prolong flowering, it is also advisable to keep the tulips cool. In warmth, they will fade faster.
