The Irish rose or eustoma is a very beautiful plant, the flowers of which in appearance are really very similar to the queen of the garden. And although the eustoma is not so prickly, it still has its own whims. Let's take a closer look at the peculiarities of growing this delicate plant, so that some difficulties do not become an unpleasant surprise for us
Conditions for eustoma flowering
One of the main difficulties in growing eustoma is that it is a plant with a very long period of development. Namely, flowering occurs not earlier than six months after the emergence of seedlings, and sometimes even later. Therefore, when growing a flower in winter, you should hurry up in order to have time to sow seeds for seedlings in January, otherwise in the summer you may not wait for the buds to appear.
Eustoma works best in warm regions. If you live in a middle lane climate, choosing eustoma seeds, play it safe and take a variety with an early flowering period.
If the flowering period is not listed on the package, look for other characteristics. As a rule, hybrids bloom faster (packaging should be marked with F1) and short plants.
When planning a place for eustoma in a flower bed, it is also important to consider your climate. In more southern regions, it is undesirable to plant flowers in an open sunny area. Let it be shaded by the lace shade of taller plants at least part of the day.
But in cities and villages with a cooler climate and frequent cloudy weather, try to take a place where the plant will not be constantly in the shade.
How to sow eustoma seeds
In addition, take into account that eustoma will bloom in 6-7 months only if due attention and necessary care was given to it during this period. Namely: optimal soil and air humidity, temperature and lighting of seedlings. When, at this stage, the florist has not seen the plant somewhere, then flowering may come even later, or it may not happen at all.
So what conditions must be observed when sowing seeds and growing seedlings? First of all, sowing must be carried out not in a common container, but immediately in separate cups or peat tablets. The fact is that the eustoma is hard to transfer the transplant and does not like it when the root system is disturbed.
The seeds do not need to be buried in the soil mixture. The soil is moistened, then seeds are spread on top. Then the containers with crops are covered and placed in a warm place. For example, they will be quite comfortable on a warm battery.
Eustoma seedlings care
Seed germination lasts approximately 2-3 weeks. When the seedlings appear, it is important to provide additional lighting for the small plants. Because the lighting that occurs at the end of winter is not enough for the eustoma to bloom in the future at the right time.
Don't forget about humidity. And if it is not difficult to ensure soil moisture with watering, then air dryness is another problem that a florist will face in room conditions in winter. There are two ways out - either hide the seedlings under a transparent cover, for example, in a container with a transparent lid, or use a humidifier.
In small cups and peat tablets, the eustoma will grow the root system for about two months. After that, it is necessary to transfer into larger pots, about 200 g. At the bottom, be sure to pour a layer of perlite or vermiculite. It should also be added to the soil. It will be useful to mix in a little chalk. And as soon as you see that the roots are again entwined with an earthen lump, transfer to another pot is required again - one finger wider in size.
Another condition for eustoma flowering is not to forget about feeding while growing seedlings. This is done often, but in small doses. Vermicompost is very helpful in this. But you don't need to overfeed either. Otherwise, the plant will build up greenery and flowering will also be delayed.
