Asparagus is grown both as indoor ampelous plants and for cutting to form bouquets. And the open field variety is used not only to decorate the garden, but also as a nutritious and healthy delicacy. Let's take a closer look at this unusual and multifunctional plant

Asparagus Sprenger - a cloud of cladodia

Asparagus Sprenger is one of the most popular varieties in indoor floriculture. Lovers of ampelous plants will appreciate it. A thick light green cloud of elastic shoots, strewn with thin short cladodia, rises high above the pot, and from there falls like a thick cloud around its walls. Give him free rein, so a flowerpot suspended from the ceiling will lower its fluffy shoots to the floor.

This variety has an attractive decorative appearance both before the flowering period, and during and after. The buds bloom fragrant snow-white petals from May to June. And after the twigs will decorate a lot of bright red berries. Fruiting usually does not occur in the wound, than the plant turns 3 years old.

This is an undemanding indoor pet. You can propagate by sowing seeds and dividing the bush. Sowing starts in February. The cultivation technology of this variety and the pinnate are similar.

Don't confuse pinnate asparagus with ferns

Asparagus pinnate, unlike the Sprenger variety, is an upright plant. It attracts attention with stems of a wide pyramidal shape, strewn with numerous thin cladodia in one horizontal plane. Sometimes it is mistakenly called a fern, but these are completely different plants.

Asparagus pinnate can also be propagated by seed at home. Sowing is carried out from January to February. They are satisfied with shading from the bright sun. From the nursery, they are transferred to small pots, which are installed in the greenhouse. It is recommended to feed with mullein infusion. As young plants grow, they are transplanted into larger containers using the transfer method.

In summer they are kept at room temperature, often watered. In winter, the optimal conditions will be + 10 … + 12 ° С. You need to water less, but spray often.

This variety can also be propagated by dividing the bush - it is quite easy to tear it into several parts. In addition, feathery asparagus is grown from a cuttings. You can start this method no earlier than when the plant turns 3 years old. This can be done from late winter to mid-summer. Young shoots are not taken for cuttings - they should be last year's, maybe even older. Rooting takes 5-7 months.

Medicinal asparagus for kitchen and garden

In the first half of summer, they start sowing such a variety of asparagus as medicinal asparagus. It is grown in the open field, and for more than two millennia it has been used by people not only as an ornamental plant, but also as a food plant.

To harvest a good crop of shoots, the site must be well filled with humus. But asparagus is good because, unlike other crops, it develops well in partial shade. Moreover, when this variety of asparagus is grown for culinary needs, and not to decorate the site, the shoots do not even have time to really appear out of the ground - they are harvested when they just appeared on the surface, and better even earlier.

The fact that the time has come to harvest is evidenced by the cracking of the earth, a slight rise of hills with plantings. True, it will not be possible to enjoy the delicacy soon. After transplanting asparagus seedlings from the nursery to a permanent place, the first crop of shoots is harvested only in the third year. By the way, only male plants should be selected for food beds - they are more productive. And women, who have berries on the branches, are best used for decorative purposes.
