Many bulbous plants came to our latitudes from countries with a tropical climate, and for the winter, planting material from open ground is moved to storage indoors. However, this procedure is not a guarantee that the bulbs will be perfectly preserved until the next planting. During storage, the bulbs can be affected not only by diseases due to storage errors, but also by various parasites. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor the planting material, and, if necessary, provide quick assistance
Conditions for storing planting material of gladioli
One of the brightest and most popular bulbous plants in home gardens is gladiolus. To create optimal conditions for its safety, the room containing the dug planting material should be well ventilated, and the air temperature should be approximately + 5 … + 10 ° С. Of course, it can be difficult for city dwellers to provide such conditions. What dangers lie in wait for the bulbs if the storage conditions are not followed and how can you help them?
First of all, you need to know that the storage should be carried out in one or two layers, and the bulbs should be placed strictly with the bottom down. The fact is that after awakening, the kidney will stretch vertically upward, regardless of the position in which the bulb was. And when the planting material is randomly poured into the basket, the sprouts can turn out to be crooked. And the peculiarity of gladiolus is that in the future they do not straighten. And if you have such specimens with sprouts tilted to the side, they are planted on their side so that the stem looks up.
However, when the goal is to accelerate the proliferation of gladiolus bulbs, the bulbs should be stored on their side. This stimulates the appearance of children.
How to get rid of parasites in bulbs?
During the growing season, gladioli can be attacked by aphids, wireworms, slugs. But most of the damage is caused by thrips, which continue to harm the bulbs during dormancy. For prophylaxis, it is necessary to process the planting material before storing it. When there are doubts about the infection of the bulbs with thrips, it is recommended to sprinkle them with mothballs.
What to do with mold and premature roots?
When stored in a too dry room, the planting material also dries out. Therefore, when insulating the balcony, it is a good idea to leave the bulbs there for storage. But with the arrival of heat, you need to make sure that the humidity in the storage place does not increase sharply - this is no less harmful than dry air. Under these conditions, the bulbs can become moldy. Another undesirable consequence of a sharp thaw is the early growth of roots from the bottom. They will later dry out and this will disrupt the life cycle of the plant.
When the mold has only touched the filmy scales, they must be removed. Pockets of infection may also appear under them. Such sores are treated with brilliant green. For the purpose of prevention, a healing solution is also applied to the bottom of the bulb.
Despite the fact that mold is inherently a fungus, it is undesirable to fight it in winter on bulbs with fungicides in liquid form. From such processing, they wake up ahead of time, swell and begin to sprout.
Those specimens that have already acquired roots and in which the bud is about to start growing are put on germination. If before the bulbs were stored in the dark, in closed boxes, now you need to expose them to the light. And move from opaque boxes to transparent containers.
What to do with bulbs that have grown too long roots too early? These gladioli can be planted indoors. At the same time, it is important to provide flowers with a deep container. Narrow but tall beds should be preferred to low, wide boxes so that the roots grow freely deeper into the ground.
