How to grow healthy high-quality seedlings - this is the question that many gardeners regularly ask themselves, because they know for sure that productivity equally depends on the correctness of actions at any stage.

Many budding gardeners believe that sowing seeds is not such a difficult task. However, everything is not as simple as it seems at first glance. And when planting seeds, special rules should be followed so that unpleasant miscalculations and mistakes can be avoided.

The main mistake many beginners make is that they expect to simply plant seeds in the ground and get a decent result. This circumstance applies only to such crops as, for example, legumes and pumpkin. However, planting seedlings has many more benefits. Tomatoes, cucumbers, celery and parsnips can only be planted through seedlings. As for the purchase of ready-made seedlings, you can grow many more species on your own than are available on the free market.

When to sow seedlings?

All seed producers post information on when is the best time to start sowing seedlings. Of course, everything also depends on the region where your dacha is located. As for the approximate dates, for most crops this period falls in February or March.

If you have greenhouses, you can plant seeds early, for example, even in January.

Seedling container

Actually, the choice of container for seedlings is in direct proportion to whether you will dive the seedlings themselves later. If you are going, then you should sow seeds in common containers. Thanks to this method, the seedlings will germinate quite quickly. When the second pair of leaves appears, the seedlings should be transferred to separate pots.

However, if picking is not for you, then you should plant the seeds in different containers in advance. For this purpose, both pots and any containers from yogurt or any other household products are suitable. The most convenient option would be pots, where the plant can be planted immediately in the ground: such pots will decompose when planted in the ground. These pots are made from peat or pressed rice flour.

The root system of cucumbers, zucchini and eggplant is most sensitive to any damage during transplantation, so their seeds should be planted immediately in separate containers.

The choice of soil for seedlings

Considerable attention should also be paid to the choice of soil for seedlings. You can purchase a special mixture, or you can create it yourself. For this purpose, a mixture of sand, garden soil and humus is used. All of these ingredients must be sifted through a garden sieve, however, you can also use a colander. After that, you will have a fine seedling substrate.

Such a mixture will have to be disinfected either by steam or in the microwave. This should be done in advance, then the microflora will be restored by the time the seeds are planted.

After the seed has been sown, the variety of each crop should be signed and the data supplemented with the date of planting of the seeds.

Lighting and temperature

This point is also incredibly important for a successful harvest in the future. If there is insufficient light, the seedlings will grow very weakly. Ideally, germinated seeds need about 14 hours of bright light per day. Therefore, you can also use backlight lamps to create additional lighting. You should also make sure that the sprouts receive the same amount of light from each side.

As for the temperature, it should not be extremely low, just like very high. The ideal will be to keep the seedlings at about eighteen degrees of heat.

As for watering, it is impossible to allow the soil to dry out and water stagnation. Water should be watered with water at room temperature. Actually, we can say that the seedlings require frequent and fairly moderate watering.

Seedling care is very important, because what your crop will be will depend on this. It is not for nothing that they say that they feed every day in the spring.
