December is just around the corner. And at this time, traditionally, pots with luxurious poinsettia appear in flower shops. Many are surprised when they hear that this plant does not have an expressive flowering. In fact, her flowers are almost invisible. A bright appearance is given by the apical leaves - the stipules of the flowers. Unfortunately, not every grower manages to make the Christmas star bloom again. Moreover, it often happens that after the New Year holidays, the plant dies. How to prevent such a fate and continue to enjoy the original look of the flower every Christmas?
How to outsmart a flower to bloom again?
To many novice flower growers, pruning indoor flowers may seem like something seditious, and they zealously cherish every twig and every shoot. However, in the case of poinsettia, this approach, on the contrary, will only harm the flower. After all, it is precisely in pruning that the basic rule of caring for poinsettia consists, without which the Christmas star will not again stain the stipules of flowers with a bright red color. The secret is that it blooms on young, strong shoots.
Often, fans of indoor floriculture are embarrassed by the fact that after a successful long three- or even four-month flowering, the Christmas star suddenly completely sheds its leaves. It is a mistake to think that the plant is dead. This is a normal reaction, and this moment should be used in order to carry out a radical pruning.
How much to cut the flower? It is recommended to leave no more than two buds on each stem. On average, the length of the "twig" left will be about 10 cm. This technique stimulates the growth of young shoots, and the plant itself becomes more branched and lush after such a procedure.
Plant care after pruning
After trimming, the poinsettia needs to be given a rest period. To do this, reduce the watering of the flower as much as possible. The earth is moistened only enough so that the roots in the earth do not dry out.
A month or two after pruning, the grooming regime changes dramatically. Now it is important:
• provide poinsettia with good lighting;
• water the flower abundantly;
• to feed the plant.
As for watering, it is necessary to warn flower growers against excessive potting. This flower does not like excessive moisture, and you need to moisten the soil after it is dry enough.
With this care, the Christmas star will release several shoots at once. Of these, it is recommended to keep three or four of the strongest.
Short daylight hours and bright morning sun
But even after that, the poinsettia may not bloom. And all because it is a short day plant. In order for him to have flower buds, it is necessary to provide him with such conditions that the daytime for him lasts a couple of hours less than the dark. In winter, this is problematic due to the fact that artificial lighting is turned on in houses and apartments. But if you really want your beauty to bloom again, you will have to use your ingenuity: arrange a light-tight cap for her, which will be put on the pot in the evening and removed in the morning of the next day, or put away for about 13-14 hours in a dark closet.
There is another subtlety here. Since the decorative appearance of poinsettia is mostly provided by bright contrastingly colored stipules, in the morning after removing the shelter from the pot, the flower should be left in the most luminous place. This is how the apical leaves will acquire their characteristic shade. Another helper that contributes to the bright color of the apical leaves is phosphorus-potassium dressing during this period.
