In terms of nutritional value, legumes compete with meat, in their composition from 20 to 40 percent are proteins, from 2 to 60 percent - fats. People love to feast on unripe beans or grains when they are soft, juicy, and tender. But more often fully ripe fruits are used for food, which can be stored for a long time. Before humans appeared on Earth, legumes were actively eaten by animals. Today people specially grow legumes such as clover and vetch to feed their pets.

Legumes play a huge role in restoring the fertility of depleted lands. Unlike most plants that consume nitrogen from the soil, legumes have a unique ability - they fix nitrogen from the atmosphere. On their roots, they harbor specific bacteria. The latter form nodules, in which, as if in a pantry, nitrogen compounds, available for plant nutrition, accumulate. This ability converts legumes into desirable precursors for other plants.

This subfamily unites shrubs and trees (less often grasses), the abundant flowering of which is suspended by the birth of pods of different lengths and widths. Accordingly, the beans hiding behind the flaps come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

For example, members of the Entada genus, which mostly grow in sultry Africa, hide their beans in wide and long pods. The pod looks like a multi-story building. On each "floor" one bean lives, sometimes reaching the size of a hen's egg.

More familiar to us, representatives of the subfamily Mimosa are acacia and mimosa. Moreover, the yellow fluffy balls on fragile and graceful twigs, which we sell at every corner for the women's holiday under the name "Mimosa", are actually one of the types of acacia.

Mimosa flowers differ from acacia flowers in a smaller number of stamens. Acacia always has more stamens than fingers on two human hands.

The flowers of spherical inflorescences of tropical shrubs and trees with the name Albizia also have a large number of long stamens. Lush inflorescences cover the tree in a continuous cloud. The inflorescences will be replaced by clusters of long and flat pods with beans.

Subfamily Caesalpiniaceae

The Caesalpiniaceae subfamily is mainly found in nature in the form of tropical trees that love moisture. Although they grow well and on a thin strip of cultivated sands on the eastern edge of Africa.
