A few words about the disease
With the onset of spring, when young shoots begin to grow, brownish specks begin to form at their bases, gradually merging into rings. The stems are characterized by darkening, dry out and break.
Quite large spreading brown spots appear on the leaves of peonies attacked by gray rot. When dry weather is established, they gradually necrotic, and with high humidity, they begin to rot and abundantly become covered with an unpleasant gray bloom. Gradually, the infected leaves fade. The buds, without blooming, dry up. The same thing happens with sepals and flowers. Large buds turn brown and bloom very poorly, and often they bloom only on one side, which gives them a rather one-sided appearance. And the blackened small buds either rot or dry out. The browned petals of peonies also dry out, and the flowers take on a very ugly appearance.
All the dry parts of the infected peonies that have turned brown colored, begin to develop a characteristic gray mold. In the case of a particularly severe defeat of peonies, luxurious bushes begin to fall apart, and the stems begin to fall and dry out.
The gray rot of peony is caused by the fungus of peony botrytis. The pathogen persists mainly on plant remains, as well as in peony rhizomes, provoking their decay. In most cases, it is carried by ants and spreads when it rains. And the more active development of the unfortunate misfortune is facilitated by sharp temperature drops, as well as rainy and cold weather in both spring and summer. Shading of plants, excess nitrogen in the soil and high air humidity also favor the spread of infection. Earlier varieties of peonies are most strongly attacked by gray rot. At the same time, the disease proceeds very violently on clay, heavy and damp soils, in the case of a close occurrence of groundwater and on poorly ventilated thickened plantings.
How to fight
Proper garden hygiene is essential to prevent gray rot of peonies. All infected areas of beautiful flowers must be trimmed and destroyed immediately. As a rule, they are taken out of the plots or burned, the main thing is to prevent them from getting into the garden compost and being in the gardens.
Excessively thickened peony plantings should be planted in advance. It will not hurt to thin them out - this is necessary for good ventilation of the plants. Such an ingenuous measure will ensure that there are no favorable conditions for the reproduction of the pathogen.
Unfortunately, there are currently no preparations specially designed to combat the gray rot of the peony, therefore, the fight against this scourge is carried out by treating the pion plantings with antifungicides used to treat other garden plants. A preparation for roses called "Rose clear" has proven itself quite well.
Plants should be treated with antifungicides only after the parts of the flowers affected by gray rot have been removed. In this case, it is necessary to comply with all safety requirements and other instructions of the manufacturer of the drug, which are usually placed on the package or on a special insert. Often, a single early treatment with mild antifungicides is quite enough, and there is no need to re-process the peonies later.
