How not to be left without a plum crop

Probably everyone loves plum fruits: sweet, slightly sour, white and black, large and not so much. And what a delicious compote or jam from it! And in order to cook jam or compote, you need to get a good harvest from the tree, and this, unfortunately, is not always possible. Sometimes the fruits crumble due to pests, sometimes due to diseases of the tree itself. What to do in order not to be left without a crop?

The fruits are wormy and crumble

The fact that in this case the plum crumbles is a completely natural result of the defeat of the fruit by a pest - a yellow plum sawfly. If you break a damaged plum, you will most likely find a small yellowish-white worm inside. This is the larva of the sawfly beetle. The sawfly is a very unpleasant pest and the fight against it should be started even before the plum tree blooms.

The sawfly larvae pupate in early spring, and adult insects hatch from the pupae a few days before the flowering of the plum. These insects lay their eggs in the buds of the plum tree. Gradually, larvae appear from the eggs, which penetrate into the ovary and grow with it. That is, the larvae are in the future drain from the very beginning. Then, in July, the larva leaves its "house" and buries itself in the ground at the roots of a plum tree in order to pupate and hatch into a full-fledged insect in the spring.

Based on the foregoing, the fight against the sawfly begins in July. As the fruits fall, you need to collect them, but in no case leave them on the site! Either take it as far as possible to a landfill, or burn it. Under no circumstances should such unripe plums get into the compost! In autumn, carefully dig up the near-trunk circle of soil so as to turn the soil over. Then the larvae (at least part of them) of the sawfly will be on the surface and will freeze in winter. In the spring, some time before flowering, spray the tree with a 0.3% solution of karbofos. Spraying will need to be repeated after the plum blossom is complete.

Resin streaks appear on the tree trunk

There are several reasons for the appearance of resin on the bark of trees: it may be improper care, an excess of nitrogen in the soil, excessive moisture, acidic soil, sunburn, damage to the tree by frost or pests. Most often, the resin flows in the spring, during the beginning of active sap flow. The main danger of the appearance of resin is that bacteria, which cause disease and death of the tree, settle in the bark impregnated with resin.

First of all, you need to remove the resin from the tree, this is done with a knife, very carefully. After the procedure, we cover the wounds with garden pitch.

Now analyze what caused the appearance of the gum (the reasons are indicated above) and remove it. For example, if the reason is inappropriate soil - transplant the tree, if the area is too wet - drain it, and so on. Do not forget about regular whitewashing of the tree trunk and proper care.

The tips of tree shoots dry out

The most common cause of this is the most common disease of plum trees - gray rot. In plants with such diseases, young shoots and leaves look as if they were burned by fire. Gray rot is dangerous because it affects not only leaves and shoots, but also fruits: they become soft, brown, then dry out. Gray rot spreads especially quickly if it is rainy for a long time.

Fighting gray rot is not very difficult, but you need to spend time: constantly, as it appears, it is necessary to remove damaged shoots and fruits, then burn them, in no case do not store or send them to compost! Then, in the spring, before the tree blooms, treat it with Bordeaux liquid or colloidal sulfur. After flowering, repeat the spraying.
