It is almost impossible to imagine a garden without flowers. They are an inimitable decoration that creates the effect of an unsurpassed atmosphere, comfort and harmony. Flowers saturate the space with bright colors, lush bloom and pleasant aroma. The fashion for flowers has not faded away for several centuries, despite the difficulties in leaving, gardeners continue to decorate their plots. And not only them! But also gazebos, patios, verandas and balconies. And ampelous plants do an excellent job with this task
Do you have any on your site yet? Perhaps the time has come to pay attention to them. Today, stores offer a huge assortment of ampelous flowers, which confuses even experienced flower growers, and what can we say about those who decided to do this for the first time. It is very difficult to pass by the bags of seeds, on which wonderful flowers are adorned, yes, what can I say, it is almost impossible. But how not to be mistaken in your choice? And what kind of plants are suitable for growing in hanging pots and flowerpots? We'll figure out!
What are ampelous plants?
Ampel plants (aka ampels) are flowering or ornamental plants with creeping, creeping or upward shoots. Ampels are grown in baskets, flowerpots, hanging pots and pots. Ampel can be called both greenhouse or indoor, and plants intended for open ground. Today, these include not only flowers, but also undersized shrubs. The main task facing ampelous plants is zoning or decorating verandas, terraces, balconies, gazebos, porches or window openings. With proper care and optimal conditions, they can turn an unremarkable place into a real paradise.

Petunia
Probably one of the brightest representatives of ampelous plants is petunia. She is very popular among gardeners. It is appreciated for its unpretentious care, a wide range of colors and long flowering. Almost all available varieties of petunias are suitable for growing as ampelous plants. Petunias need fertile and moderately moist soil and a place open to the sun. Observing these conditions, the plants will delight flowering until the onset of cold weather.
Calibrachoa
Many believe that calibrachoa is a species of petunia, but this is a misconception, although some sources still talk about it. Outwardly, both plants are very similar, but unlike petunias, the species in question has longer shoots and small flowers, the diameter of which does not exceed 3-3.5 cm. Amateur flower growers have long appreciated the decorative properties of calibrachoa, and successfully grow its various varieties. Plants require slightly acidic soil, a sunny location, regular moistening and feeding with phosphorus fertilizers.
Bacopa
Bacopa is a flower culture popular in European countries, but rarely used in Russia. And in vain! Bacopa is undemanding to growing conditions, it develops well and blooms both in sunny and weakly shaded areas. The plant is warm and moisture-loving, will not tolerate excessive dryness of the soil and waterlogging. Bacopa flowers look very attractive and sophisticated against the background of rich foliage. The flowering of the species in question is abundant and long-lasting. The plant is able to withstand a short-term drop in temperatures down to -3C (although this applies only to adult specimens).
Begonia
Begonia deserves no less attention. She is beautiful, but rather whimsical. Begonia has a negative attitude towards heat and prolonged drought, will not tolerate direct sunlight, but does not tolerate thick shade either. In heavily shaded areas, plants lose their decorative properties. Soils for growing begonias are desirable light, loose, slightly acidic, rich in humus. Plants will decorate any veranda or terrace, even in one copy, as they can boast of abundant flowering.
Pelargonium ampelous
A couple of decades ago, ampelous pelargonium was at the peak of popularity, today interest in the plant has faded a little, although some flower growers still grow it to decorate gazebos, balconies and verandas. Pelargonium ampelous has a number of advantages, among which drought resistance should be noted. The plant prefers sunny areas and loamy soils. Caring for him is simple: top dressing (no excess nitrogen) and moderate watering.
Dichondra
Dichondra is an ornamental deciduous ampelous plant. Its shoots can reach 1.5 m in length. The foliage of the dichondra is very attractive, it can be both green and silvery. Hanging from a flowerpot, the dichondra looks original; it will add a magical charm to any (even nondescript) spot in the garden. The plant develops well in sunny and semi-shaded areas, needs moderate watering and fertilizing with complex mineral fertilizers.
Of course, this is not the entire list of plants that can be used as ampelous plants. Also, these include lobelia, fortune, ampelous fuction, surfiniya, nasturtium, verbena, diastia, strange nolana and many others.
