In this edition of the secrets of the home garden and its use, we will offer you the following types of plants that could serve as a great addition to your kitchen and dishes in it. And also you will find here those cultures that seemed to grow only in your summer cottage garden, but not in your apartment. And although the harvest of such crops will expect better, why not set up an experiment and try to cultivate something new in home apartment beds?
Cymbopogon
It is a perennial, herbaceous herb. Another name is lemongrass. He is very popular in the southern parts of America. But even in our apartment conditions it is quite possible to grow such greens. It is grown like any other greens. To get the branches of the herb, you should buy this stem herb in the store, in the vegetable department or in the green market.
When you eat the stem, do not discard its roots and distill them. You need to place the roots in a jar of water at room temperature and put them on the windowsill, where there is a lot of light. After about seven days, the spine will sprout. Now it can be transplanted into the soil prepared for growing greens at home (see the first issue of secrets). A 25-30 centimeter stem of the plant is used for food. It can also be dried and then added to dishes.
Other types of greenery
You can grow celery, bok choy, any cabbage in the same way as cymbopogon. Let's eat the stem of these crops, and their roots can be put in water for seven days. Then, when they take root, we plant the plants in the ground. After that, all that remains is to water the growing greens and eat the grown stems of plants.
Garlic
It would seem that growing garlic at home is a difficult task. But no, you can grow a garlic bulb literally in the very first winter season on the windowsill. To do this, you need to stick a couple (or more, if you wish) of garlic cloves with the roots stored on them into the ground, water and put the container with the soil in a warm, well-lit place. Garlic roots will harden in the soil and give the first shoots. Prune them in a timely manner so that the plant spends all its energy on the formation of the bulbous part of the garlic.
Potato
Scared? We understand. It is not even possible to grow potatoes in your apartment in winter. And why, when you can go to the market and buy it as much as you need, of the required variety, if the summer cottage this year was badly born.
We propose to grow potatoes in a home greenhouse for the sake of our own garden experiment, observing the growth and formation of a potato bush at all stages. Indeed, in suburban conditions, there is always not enough time for this. And it would be interesting for children to demonstrate how ordinary potatoes develop and grow, from which parents make mashed potatoes for them.
To grow a potato bush in an apartment, take one potato, always with eyes. Cut into pieces so that the eyes remain on them. Place on paper and let the potato pieces dry for two days. This technique will not allow the potatoes to rot in the ground. Now plant the seed parts of the potatoes in holes in the ground about 20 cm deep. Yes, you need to plant them at a good depth. Then, care for the growing potatoes as you would any other houseplants. After the set "potato time", you will receive its harvest.
Sweet potato or sweet potato
A very useful plant that takes up a lot of space in the summer cottage, therefore many gardeners refused it. And you try to grow it in your home garden. It is planted and grown in the same way as regular potatoes (see above). The soil for planting should be moist, fertilized. After about a week, you will see sprout from the planted tuber on the surface of the soil.
When its height reaches 10 cm, trim it (you do not need the sweet potato to grow in length, as in the country). Plant another sweet potato tuber with an eye next to it (20 cm or more). Slugs often grow on sweet potatoes (even in a room greenhouse). Watch this moment. The crop can be dug out of the soil about four months after planting the tubers.
A pineapple
But don't you want to try planting such exotic things at home in winter? In fact, it is not difficult to grow it. We buy pineapples in the store, cut off the top from them, the one with the leaves. We eat everything edible in pineapple. And from the cut off top we remove the pineapple pulp, which can rot in the ground. We place the green part of the plant in the water until the roots appear on the outlet.
Now the roots can be planted in the ground to a depth of three centimeters with the roots down, of course. Water your pineapple to keep the soil slightly damp. After a month or two (depending on growing conditions), you will see young shoots on the plant. This will mean that it has taken root in a new place. The plant grows beautifully, like a small pineapple tree. And it will bring you the first fruit in about 2-3 years. But the wait will be worth it, we assure you.
