One of the first most favorite berries of summer residents, grown in their own garden, is strawberries or garden strawberries. Everyone, both adult summer residents and their younger generation, are waiting for the season when bright scarlet berries ripen in the beds and you can enjoy their aroma and amazing taste. But you can also remind yourself of summer in winter by growing a few strawberry bushes on … a windowsill
What do you need to grow garden strawberries at home?
Of course, one could simply buy strawberries in the supermarket in the winter at a fabulous price. But who will vouch for the taste and quality of such a berry? And it is so nice to try your hand at a home garden in an apartment. But, in fact, we do not need so much to grow ripe berries at home. Just planting living material, from the first row of mustache of garden strawberries (but not frigo, but from a variety suitable for neutral daylight hours). Supplementary lighting lamps, soil and containers for planting will also be needed. Well, the following information.
Preparing seedlings for planting in the ground
We offer the most simple and uncomplicated method for obtaining seedlings. As soon as the first autumn frosts come, you need to dig out the strawberry rosettes (young) from the soil in the country house from the root, remove the withered, mechanically damaged and frozen leaves from them. At least two or three young full-fledged leaves should remain on the outlet.
Dilute a slightly pink solution of potassium permanganate, hold the roots of the rosette in it for several hours. Then transplant into pots or a long pot of potting soil for indoor flowers (buy at a store). The soil mixture must be mixed with sand in advance (two parts of soil, one part of sand), if it has not been added to it in advance.
Purchased soil in this case will relieve you of the obligation to sterilize garden soil. You will not transfer diseases of plants and their pests to the house with her, since such a mixture is sterile and undergoes thorough processing and testing before sale.
How to plant seedlings?
We made a hole in the soil mixture, planted a rosette root in it. Make sure that the "heart" of the plant (located just above the root node) is above the surface of the soil, otherwise the rosette will simply rot. We covered it with soil carefully.
Now water your seedlings. Start by putting it on a window sill with little outside sunlight for a few days. After three days, move the container with the seedlings to the sunny side. If there is not enough light for the plant in such a place, you need to use an additional lighting lamp. Homemade strawberries should receive light rays from 12 to 14 hours a day.
Conditions for good growth of homemade strawberries
Perhaps we will repeat ourselves somewhere, but we will remind you of the conditions for better growth and obtaining fruits from homemade strawberries.
Condition 1. Mandatory supplementary lighting of strawberry seedlings with a phytolamp up to 14 hours a day. It is better in this case to use a phytolamp, since an ordinary lamp will weaken the growth and development of plants.
Condition 2. You need to keep strawberries not in the room, but on the windowsill. The air temperature at this place is constantly measured. It should be 20 degrees C. Not lower than this value. In cooler conditions, strawberries can become infected with fungus.
Condition 3. You should not allow stagnation of water in pots with a plant. But dry soil should not be allowed either. That is, the water regime must be balanced to the "golden mean".
Condition 4. A month after planting, the strawberries need to be transplanted to a more spacious place by transshipment of its root system. That is, you need to take a lump of earth as deep as possible around the root of the outlet and carefully transplant it to a new place.
Condition 5. So that the fruits are subsequently not deformed on the plant, it must be artificially pollinated by hand with a soft ordinary brush.
Top dressing for homemade strawberries
The first feeding for homemade strawberries can be a complex fertilizer from a gardening store, intended for garden strawberries or strawberries. It is introduced during watering in a form diluted according to the instructions on the package. The first feeding should be at the first buds on it.
The second is the same after removing the first berries from the bush. Fertilization in this case does not go into the fruits, but into the roots of the plant, into its growth and recovery.
When will the harvest be?
When growing strawberries at home in winter, the time from its planting in the ground to the appearance of flowers on it varies in about 35 days. And the berries can be removed from the bush in a month after the flowers appear. Have a nice winter harvest!
