Peas are good for everyone: both for their nutritional properties, and the ability to enrich the soil with the nitrogen necessary for other plants, and at the same time improve the mechanical structure of the soil. Haven't planted legumes on your plot yet? Then it's time to get to know them better
Why are beans called magic?
All garden legumes have a record protein and carbohydrate content. In addition, peas, beans, beans contain a high proportion of such useful elements as calcium, phosphorus, iron. But in contrast to the more common heat-loving beans on the backyard plots, peas are still favorably distinguished by their cold resistance. And they begin to sow the crop at an early date. This is also important because during this period the soil contains such an amount of moisture that is needed for the seeds to swell.
It is impossible to ignore the fact that legumes have the property of green manure, enriching the soil with nitrogen, so that other crops can be placed after them with less fertilization. While other vegetables take nutrients out of the ground, peas, on the contrary, replenish their amount. However, you can sow peas after any other vegetables. Another useful quality of plants is that they convert hardly soluble phosphates into more digestible ones, which significantly increases the level of soil fertility.
Legumes are useful not only for humans and the land on which they are grown. This amazing crop is also used by livestock owners as a high-protein feed. Peas form an easily silo mass.
How to create a favorable environment for peas
Is it necessary to cultivate the soil for sowing peas? To do this, it is recommended to fill the site with organic matter (3-4 kg of compost or humus per 1 square meter), as well as potassium-phosphorus compositions (wood ash will cope with this task). In the early stages of development, a minimum amount of nitrogen is also required.
On the root system of peas, special nodule bacteria conduct their useful life. For certain varieties of legumes, there are certain so-called races of these microorganisms. When peas are placed in a new place for the first time, where there were no crops before, it is recommended to use nitragin. For 1 kg of inoculum, 5 g of a bacterial preparation will be required.
Features of sowing peas in open ground
Seed preparation consists in warming up. To do this, the seeds are immersed in hot water with a small amount of boric acid for a few minutes.
Crops are performed using the belt method. 3-4 lines are made in one tape, the distance between them is kept about 16 cm. The tape aisles are made about 40 cm. The seeds are laid out in grooves no closer than 3 cm from each other. The sowing depth depends on the type of soil:
• on light soils, it is 6-7 cm;
• on heavy soils no deeper than 4-5 cm.
Freshly sown peas are not averse to nibbling migratory birds. Especially when it is embedded at a shallow depth. Therefore, after sowing, the soil is carefully compacted along the furrow. In addition, to prevent such bird sabotage, it is useful to arrange a protective canopy over the beds. For this purpose, a mesh with fine meshes is pulled over the soil surface.
In the process of their development, peas form thin long shoots. And for them you will need to install a support. There is no need to delay with this, and work should be started when the plants have already reached 10 cm in length.
The beginning of fruiting depends on the selected variety. Early ripening crops enter this period in a month. Late-ripening varieties will take 6-7 weeks.
