In our area, it is more common as a spice when pickling and preserving tomatoes, cucumbers and other vegetables, it is added when pickling cabbage. And, of course, the spice will be appropriate in recipes for meat and fish dishes, in the preparation of soups, sauces, salads. Tarragon is consumed both fresh and dried.
Growing and breeding tarragon
Tarragon can be propagated in various ways: by sowing seedlings, embedding seeds in the ground, root suckers, dividing a bush, cuttings. When sowing seeds for seedlings, the plants are transferred to the ground at the age of approximately 45-50 days. The planting is carried out according to the scheme 70 x 70 cm. The plant can grow in one place for up to 8 years, and the root suckers grow very quickly, therefore, a considerable area is needed for it. This is a light-loving culture. But if sunny places in the garden are allocated for crops that need more sunlight, tarragon can be planted in partial shade.
To protect your garden from the dominance of tarragon, it is recommended to reproduce by dividing the bush at the age of 3-4 years. This procedure begins in early spring. Planting is carried out in moist soil. The holes are made in the same way as for seedlings. After this planting operation, it is recommended to shade from direct sunlight for a while.
Tarragon planting care
On beds with perennials, weeding is carried out from weeds, watering and loosening the soil, as well as feeding the plant. Watering is recommended to be done with an abundant volume of water, but not frequent with these activities - it is enough to irrigate 2-3 times a month.
Tarragon does not have any special requirements for the composition of the soil and grows on almost any soil. But it will not be out of place to help him provide nutrients and improve the quality of the soil. To do this, in the spring, a layer of compost or plant humus is poured onto the beds. Also, wood ash can be used for fertilization, nitroammophoska is used.
Harvesting and storing tarragon
The first crop can be harvested in the fall of the year of planting. On two-year-old plants, the crop is harvested 3-4 times during the summer season. At the same time, in the process of cutting, stems with a height of 12-15 cm are left above the soil level. And for use when salting vegetables, experienced chefs recommend taking flowering specimens.
Those who intend to use tarragon for medicinal purposes need to have time to harvest at the beginning of flowering - then they have maximum healing power. The same rule applies to connoisseurs of home cosmetic procedures.
When it was not possible to use the entire fresh crop over the summer, the spice is dried. For this, cut shoots and leaves are laid out in a warm, dry room.
In addition, with the arrival of cold weather, shrubs of bushes can be transplanted into pots and continue to grow indoors. For this, containers with a diameter of 15 cm are suitable.
