There are a huge number of methods of sowing seeds, and each experienced gardener eventually chooses his own, convenient for him and time-tested. But everything in this life changes, new technologies appear that facilitate labor-intensive processes, and it is always useful to update your experience with fresh knowledge

Soil mixture for growing seedlings

Many gardeners are already preparing for the winter sowing season in the fall, preparing soil mixtures for growing seedlings in cups and containers. And it is in the soil that the seeds can wait for such unpleasant surprises as the causative agents of various diseases. Therefore, it is very important to start sowing with soil remediation or the use of other clean materials.

To disinfect the soil, you can heat the ground in the oven. Another uncomplicated method is to steam the earth with boiling water and then freeze it outside in suitable weather conditions.

For this:

1. Several holes are made in the bottom of empty cans.

2. The containers are filled with soil mixture.

3. A pair of rails is installed on a wide basin.

4. Put banks with earth on top.

5. Steam the earth with boiling water and let the water drain into the basin through the punched holes.

6. Leave the cans with soil mixture outside for 24 hours to freeze the contents.

7. Return the containers to room conditions and start sowing when the soil temperature rises to + 18 ° C.

You can also use other substrates already prepared in industrial conditions for sowing seeds for seedlings. For example, various briquettes and tablets have proven themselves well. In particular, when a large number of seeds are to be sown, it is worth paying attention to the coconut substrate. Among its advantages is a large volume of soil mixture, which is obtained from a small brick, as well as resistance to the development of fungal diseases due to its loose light structure.

When there are few seeds for seedlings, and the variety is rare and valuable, it is convenient to use containers with cells and drain holes or peat tablets. The latter do not need to be removed from the individual packaging before sowing the seeds. Right in it, the tablets are placed in a small basin, at the bottom of which a little water has been added. After a while, they will swell and will be ready to plant seeds in them.

Seed preparation for sowing

Before sowing, it will be useful to carry out procedures that will accelerate germination and confirm the viability of the seed. When there are ten seeds in a package, it is a shame if the cells are empty or the peat tablet is wasted.

To do this, it is best to use damp gauze or a bandage folded several times on a saucer. If several different varieties are taken, several saucers are allocated for these needs, and a label is placed under each container so as not to forget the marking.

Soaking lasts for several days. For this, dishes with seeds are left in a warm place. To prevent the water from evaporating too quickly, cover the saucers with cellophane. There is no need to be afraid that the seeds will suffocate - the porous structure of the tissue will save from this. But if soaking occurs on denser materials, then it is better to moisten the containers more often. You can add a drop of stimulant to the water.

Sowing seeds for seedlings

Sowing is carried out when the seeds begin to hatch.. For this, a shallow hole is made in the substrate. In a soft soil mixture, you can simply push the seed into the ground with your finger, and then lightly crush it with earth.

You do not need to water the seeds with a strong stream. For these purposes, it is recommended to start a spray bottle and spray the soil for irrigation. This will prevent crops from penetrating too deep into the soil layer. In the early days, to create greenhouse conditions, it is advisable to cover the crops with glass or polyethylene and remove to a warm place before shoots appear.
