Is it difficult to take care of the host?

Hosta is a wonderful plant that can often be found in our gardens and summer cottages. And in Europe, it is generally the number one plant for landscaping - yes, it is the host that takes the honorable first place there! However, despite the fact that this beauty has gained fame as a very undemanding plant, it also requires some attention. Let's see if it is difficult to care for her and what kind of care she needs?

Watering

The lush, lush green foliage of the beautiful hosta is endowed with the ability to evaporate a very impressive amount of moisture, therefore, when hot weather is established, it is recommended to water it periodically. And so that the soil near the plants does not begin to thicken too much, it is important to take care of the not too active water pressure.

Do not forget that hosts, especially young ones, do not like and do not tolerate waterlogging, however, during watering, in any case, the soil should get wet about ten centimeters deep. As for mature specimens, they do not need abundant watering at all, since their roots go deep into the soil anyway.

An obvious sign that a hosta needs moisture is the darkening of the tips of its leaves. You should not deny this beauty in periodic spraying, and so that she does not suffer from sunburn, it is best to spray her in the morning or in the evenings.

Transplants

Splitting too often or replanting the host regularly is not required. Ideally, the bushes are disassembled into separate rosettes only in the fourth or fifth year of life. Ideally, it is recommended to plant the hosta in partial shade, since in the bright sun it is unlikely to please with lush growth, besides, its leaves in this case will quickly turn pale. And varieties with luxurious variegated foliage in the sun can completely lose their decorative effect, and only memories will remain of the fancy light stripes!

Shelter for the winter

Hosta is a very winter-hardy perennial, however, with the onset of late autumn, its leaves should be cut off, leaving no more than ten centimeters of the plant above the soil surface. And then the lush beauty will not hurt to mulch - it will be enough just to cover her roots with garden soil with a layer of two to four centimeters.

Top dressing

Hosta responds well to various organic feedings, so it is worth pampering her from time to time. It is best to introduce such top dressing with the onset of autumn - you can simply sprinkle the area with pre-harvested organic matter: rotted pine bark, compost or leaf soil, and in some cases even not quite fresh manure will do. With this approach, the plants not only winter well, but also gain strength for the next season.

It is important to know that the host is allowed to mulch with organic matter only once every three years and not more often! And in the rest of the period, it is better to resort to the help of good mineral dressings. Granular fertilizers are especially suitable for these purposes, and it is recommended to water the plants well before sprinkling them near the hosta. It is necessary to scatter such granules very carefully, because if they fall on the leaves, they can easily provoke burns. That is why some summer residents prefer to feed a beautiful plant with liquid fertilizers - they are applied about once every two weeks until mid-July, and starting from the second half of July, these fertilizers are stopped.

As you can see, taking care of the hosta is very simple, but with such care this beauty will grow much better and more magnificently than in the absence of it! So do not be lazy and let the situation take its course - with proper care, the host will delight you with its magnificent appearance for more than one year!
