Correct pruning of currants, blackberries, honeysuckle, raspberries, gooseberries is the key to a rich harvest. In order to collect a lot of berries every year, you need to know how many branches to leave, how long to shorten them and observe some nuances

Raspberry pruning

Growing raspberries is impossible without annual pruning, as this plant has a two-year development cycle. The fruiting branch is removed, the one that has grown over the summer / young remains.

Pruning of common raspberries is carried out immediately after the last berries have been removed. All woody two-year-old stems are removed (without leaving hemp - at ground level) and weak growth. Young, well-developed, powerful shoots are left, at the rate of 5-8 branches.

In the spring (March-April), frozen, poorly developed stems are cut out, the remaining ones are cropped to a well-developed bud, the tall ones are shortened. As a result, the shoot gives 4-6 lateral fruiting shoots, which will have a positive effect on harvesting. Raspberries bear fruit well, if 15-20 shoots grow on a running meter, a larger number will lead to a decrease in yield.

Pruning honeysuckle

A lot of honeysuckle gives a bush with evenly distributed branches in the amount of 12-15 pieces. They begin to form a plant at the age of five to seven years. Pruning is done in two steps.

In the fall, a radical correction of the bush is done. After leaf fall, but no later than 2 weeks before stable frosts (in the middle lane - this is October, early November). Closely growing shoots are removed from the crown, duplicating, rubbing against neighboring branches.

Summer pruning promotes the formation of fruit formations on existing branches. It is possible to cut out weak annual growths that create excessive density. The main branches are not shortened, since fruiting occurs on a one-year-old growth. When pruning, try to leave access to sunlight to the flower buds.

Black currant pruning

The bush of an adult plant has 15-25 branches of different ages, the most productive are the third or fourth years. Fruiting occurs on the fruits of young shoots of the first and second tier of branching. You need to start pruning currants in the fall after dropping foliage or before budding in early spring.

The regularity of work eliminates thickening, stimulates branching, the growth of young shoots, which replace unproductive branches. Every year, excess growth, diseased, old, improperly growing / lying branches will be removed.

Gooseberry pruning

Crown correction work takes place in autumn or spring before foliage bloom (mid-late April). Low-fruiting, weak, old branches are removed. Shoots that do not give growth or with a minimal amount are also harvested.

The most productive gooseberry branches are 4-6-year-olds, at least 3 of these should remain on a cut bush. Berries are formed on annual and perennial pillows in 1-3 orders of magnitude branching.

Blackberry pruning

Fruiting of blackberry bushes occurs on the shoots of the second year, which need to be formed. Based on a two-year development cycle, the blackberries need to be pruned twice per season.

In the fall, last year's branches are removed, on which there were berries. Young growth is seen, weak growths are cut out. Powerful, well-developed lashes, retained and docked by a quarter. One bush should contain 8-10 branches. In the spring, poorly overwintered, broken, blackened shoots are removed.

Chokeberry (chokeberry) pruning

An adult blackberry bush can have several dozen branches of different ages. Berries are formed on the lateral and apical shoots of the previous year. The plant actively forms root shoots at the base of old branches, which leads to thickening and a decrease in fruiting.

It is advisable to cut the chokeberry every autumn, leaving about 20 branches of different ages. For a more compact crown, some young shoots can be shortened. A properly treated bush will give a lot of large berries.

Blueberry pruning

Tall blueberry varieties should have a spreading crown of upright branches. The crop appears on last year's increments. To improve the quality of berries, to reduce the fruit load, excess shoots are removed, the number of fruiting branches is regulated.

Pruning of a well-formed blueberry bush begins in the fourth year after planting. The event is held in early spring, in a warm climate - in the fall after the fall. The goal is to thin the crown, old branches are removed from the middle, thin, small, lying, drooping ones are also cut off. As a result, you should remain erect, strong. In slowly growing varieties, the branch is not completely cut off, but to strong lateral branching.
