Large and small balconies can be made into a blooming garden, an island of a riot of colors and a bouquet of aromas, as well as protection from dust and exhaust from the streets. This article is about how to harmoniously arrange plants, about the selection of varieties, taking into account the orientation relative to the south / north, about how to plant greenery on a glazed loggia
What do you need to consider?
With the onset of spring, many flora lovers and aesthetes are eager to create a fragrant oasis on the balcony. To grow it in such non-standard conditions, you need to know some of the subtleties of balcony floriculture.
The most important thing is to understand the selection of containers and varieties, taking into account the orientation of your home. The south balcony is filled with light and sun, but is destructive during hot days. The northern version is suitable only for shade-tolerant plants. Draft and wind on high floors. It is these factors that influence the choice of plants.
The volume of copies and their placement depends on the size of the future "greenhouse". More often this is a vertical arrangement, screens and containers with ampelous views.
Where to begin?
You need to clearly know what to strive for. Based on this, you choose varieties, get the necessary containers: pots, containers, ordinary pots. For the south side, take a light container, as dark tones will attract the sun and overheat. If you plan to grow vegetables and herbs in addition, it is better to combine horizontal planting with vertical beds.
Color placement options
Based on the area allocated for the mini-garden, we choose the location method. For spaces less than 3 m2, the vertical method is definitely used. To do this, you need a trellis screen or wall shelves. But, given the rules for visually increasing the area, horizontal landings will also be needed.
A container installed along a parapet or wall always looks good. It is recommended to plant ivy, vines and creepers opposite the railings. Several boxes or pots can be arranged in the free space. It is desirable to have different forms for composing compositions.
Place large pots of lush, large plants on the floor. Bushy, tall stem-shaped are appropriate here. Vines are also placed on the floor, near the wall that needs to be decorated (ekremocarpus, asarina, tunbergia, etc.). It is not recommended to overload the floor, 2-3 pieces are enough. Narrow pot shelves are created for a multi-storey garden. Try to plant it in plastic so as not to weigh down the structure. Give the upper tiers for light-loving crops, and shade-tolerant ones will grow well from below.
A small balcony is made out only along the perimeter. On decent areas, hanging pots, baskets are used, the ceiling space is turned on. Hooks and brackets for hanging containers are made on the partition with neighbors. Thus, all levels are involved. Hanging compositions with ampelous types of geranium, nasturtium, fuchsia, lobelia, verbena, forming lush hats, are amazingly decorated.
It is important to create the decoration, correctly select the plant composition and plant several species with different flowering periods in a container.
Choosing plants for the balcony
The glazed balcony makes it possible for early planting of bulbs: hyacinths, tulips, daffodils, crocuses. With the onset of warmth, indoor plants can be taken out there: anthurium, violets, dieffenbachia, etc. For open balconies, choose an assortment in accordance with the location of your house and the orientation of the loggia.
1. Plants for landscaping south side
For a "sunny" balcony, experts recommend choosing varieties that will not suffer from the heat of the day in July days. You can safely plant ageratum, salvia, Drummond phlox, pelargonium, carnation (Dutch, Chinese), godetia, daisies, nasturtium, snapdragon, levkoy, dahlias. Suitable options are asters, roses, begonias, petunias, mattiola.
For the vertical, sweet peas, passionflower, kobea, imopea, Turkish beans, lobia-dohalis, ornamental beans are suitable. Climbing nasturtium, which grows up to 2-3, 5 meters, looks amazing: "Foreign Canary", "Gardenia", "Lyuba". Will feel good "potted": cacti, aloe, netcreasia, laurel, dracaena, agave, yucca.
2. Plants for landscaping the balcony on the north side
The north and north-east side implies a choice of shade-tolerant species. Feel free to plant periwinkle, forget-me-nots, tagetes, reseda, begonia, alstiba. Ivy, maiden grapes, ampelopsis will develop well from liana-like loaches. Pot crops are suitable: aspidistra, balsam, oleander, cherry laurel, cissus, zebrin, any conifers.
3. Plants that are not afraid of drafts
Most often, flowers on the upper floors or in yards with increased aerodynamics suffer from the wind. Here, low wind-resistant plants are needed, with small foliage and peduncles. It is appropriate to plant here lobelia, verbena, dwarf asters and chrysanthemums, gatsania, pelargonium, calendula, alceolaria.
Whatever plants you choose, due to the limited space for the roots, you need top dressing, daily watering. And also the removal of faded buds, withered leaves. Only then can you enjoy your creation throughout the warm season.
