Winter cold is approaching, puzzling the owner of tub plants, where to find a sufficient number of "winter sites" to protect the plants from death. There are not so many window sills in the apartment, and those that do exist are already occupied with indoor flowers. This problem can be solved by replacing at least some of the exotic plants that are sensitive to the cold, growing in tubs, with winter-hardy shrubs and trees
Pros of potted crops
Firstly, the most important advantage of potted plants is the possibility of numerous combinations of their location in relation to other potted or stationary plants. An annoying or boring composition can be easily turned into a new, pleasing to the eye, simply by changing the location of the pot.
Secondly, plants in pots delight us all year round, while those growing in open ground leave us for the winter. In spring they complement early blooming bulbous flowers; in the summer they diversify the riot of colors of flower beds even more, decorate balconies, loggias and terraces; in the fall they delight with bright colors of leaves and fruits; in winter they do not allow to conquer sadness and sorrow, evoking with their greenery the memory of summer, of the short duration of winter.
Fashion for cold-resistant plants
The growing fashion for cold-resistant plants did not pass by the tub plants that adorn terraces and balconies. Having suffered from capricious exotic plants, people are slowly returning to the natural nature that surrounds them today. The proverb gets a new life: "Where he was born, there he came in handy."
Low-growing shrubs and trees, the roots of which do not require soil depth, can become permanent residents of balconies and terraces. Such plants can be dwarf pine and boxwood.
Expressive accents in potted compositions in spring will create azaleas and rhododendrons, which are characterized by sufficient winter hardiness.
The dwarf silver-leaved maple can count on the role of a favorite of terraced plants in the fall.
Rosemary winters well outdoors in areas with mild winters. But its roots are chilly in cramped pots when the air temperature is below freezing. If it is not possible to remove the pots indoors, you need to wrap them with linen, jute linen or special insulation mats, moving the pots closer to the wall of the house.
The ornamental apple tree ("Tina") is suitable as tub plants, the fruits of which hang firmly on the branches until the very frost. And viburnum, tseanotus (krasnokorennik), cinquefoil shrub (Kuril tea) are distinguished by lush flowering.
Care of tub plants
1) The correct choice of capacity for the plant. The container must be sufficiently strong and roomy. The larger its size, the less often you will have to water and feed the soil.
2) Frost resistance of the material. Since we decided to leave the pots outside for the winter, they must be able to withstand winter temperatures without cracking from the minus marks of the thermometer and reliably protect the plant.
3) It is imperative to have a drainage hole at the bottom of the pot so that the roots do not rot from stagnant water.
4) In autumn, it is necessary to reduce the watering of potted plants standing on the balcony or terrace.
5) If it is possible to transfer plants in tubs for the winter to a cool room, this should certainly be used. Otherwise, it is necessary to insulate the plants remaining in nature as much as possible.
6) The roots of plants are especially affected by the cold, so the pots require insulation. They are wrapped in canvas, jute linen, and special insulated mats. The pots are removed in places protected from the wind, placing them closer to the wall of the building.
7) On frost-free days, plants are watered.
8) Evergreens protect from sunlight, especially in spring.
