Roses in May

The beauty of your flower garden depends a lot on spring events. Read on for details on the first treatment and pruning of the queen of the garden. The rose is not capricious, but still needs complex care and feeding

Spring pruning rose

The rules for caring for a rose provide for two main pruning: in spring and in autumn. The first pruning is considered the most important, it is on it that the splendor of the bush and the quality of flowering depend.

Sanitary pruning

Take the pruning shears and remove all dried, damaged branches. Now inspect the remaining mass, if there are branches directed into the bush, intertwined or very thin - stop them. The rough work is done. Now the crucial moment is to work with perspective branches.

Perspective cropping

A promising branch is a strong branch with high-quality buds, which creates a dense crown and provides an abundance of bud formation. Choose the central ones among them, they are usually not greatly shortened, but only cut off by 2-4 cm. This is done like this: find a strong kidney, step back a centimeter from it and make a cut above it. It is desirable that the bud is directed not to the middle of the bush, but to the side. This will allow the plant to develop evenly, form splendor, prevent excessive thickening and overlap of branches.

The rest of the branches are cut at your discretion, so that the crown in the future turns out to be harmoniously attractive. If you want to get powerful shoots and a tall bush, then leave only 2-3 buds on the branch. The more buds, the lower the growth will be and, accordingly, the height of the bush will decrease. Therefore, here everyone chooses independently, based on their preferences.

Cut height

The total height after pruning varies depending on the climate. In warm regions, you can leave a minimum of height, because the growing season is active and fast. In central Russia, only shoots that have suffered after winter are cut off, trying not to touch living flesh. Climbing and standard roses are not subject to large-scale pruning. Only dry, injured, growing inward and fattening are removed.

Spring processing of roses

Timely processing will help prevent many problems, protect from the occurrence of diseases and insect attacks. Roses are known to be susceptible to fungal diseases and are attractive to aphids. Prevention is especially relevant at the beginning of the blooming of the second leaf, that is, in May, the roses need to be processed. Your efforts will help neutralize larvae and microorganisms.

The first event takes place after pruning. From stem cancer, spill the soil under the bush with a solution of copper sulfate (1%). For gray rot, rust, black spot, powdery mildew, iron vitriol is used (3%). By the way, such treatments must be repeated after the first flowering. Vitriol can be replaced with infusion of nettle and tansy.

After the first spraying with vitriol, a second should be carried out after 2 weeks, using a complex that includes fungicides and insecticides. Usually these are drugs: Fufanon, Fitoverm, Tiovit Jet, Aktara, Iskra, Karbofos, and you can also use Bordeaux liquid, colloidal sulfur.

If there are diseases, spraying with Skor, Topaz, Falcon, Saprol, Fundazol, Euparen, Strobi is used. These drugs have a protection period of 1–2 weeks. Those wishing to use long-acting substances use Tilt. His 0.25% solution "works for a whole month." Experts advise adding Zircon to Tilt.

Top dressing of roses in spring

After pruning, primary feeding is done, in which nitrogen predominates. Experienced growers prefer liquid solutions, as they penetrate the soil faster. For example, they use Aquamix, Kemira-Universal, Aquarin. Consumption - 3 liters for a bush.

To improve growth and abundant flowering, roses are given not only nitrogen, but also phosphate groups: nitroammophoska, superphosphate. To do this, around the bush, stepping back 30 cm from the center, a groove is made to lay the granules. For one rose, it is enough to add a tablespoon. Having scattered fertilizer evenly, the hole should be covered with earth (preferably with compost or rotten manure) and a layer of mulch should be made: cover with peat, sawdust, moss. Dry application can be replaced by watering. Dilute the fertilizer and spill the soil. In both cases, the roots will receive nutrition.

A proven method for enhancing growth is sodium humate. You just need to remember that this is an auxiliary product that will not replace basic fertilizers. Remember that spring events give strength to your roses and lay the foundation for abundant flowering.
