Description
The red mulberry is a relatively small, deciduous tree that boasts a luxurious tent-like crown. The average height of trees ranges from ten to fifteen meters, however, individual specimens sometimes grow up to twenty meters up. The leaves of this plant can be either ovoid or round or heart-shaped. All of them are endowed with sharp-edged edges and slightly pointed. The length of the leaves varies from seven to fourteen centimeters, and their width is from six to twelve centimeters. The leaves are always hairy below, and rough above. And the bark of all trees is painted in pleasant brownish-brownish shades.
The fruits of the red mulberry have the appearance of polydrupes, which are attached to the branches with sufficiently long legs. The length of each seed reaches two or three centimeters, and outwardly such berries resemble blackberries. As for the color of the fruit, it can vary from dark red to almost black.
Compound fruits are edible - they are very juicy and boast an excellent sweet and sour or slightly sweetish aftertaste.
Where grows
The natural habitat of this mulberry variety is considered to be the eastern part of North America (from South Dakota to Lake Ontario in the north of this vast continent and to Florida with Texas in the south). Most often, red mulberries are grown in countries of the subtropical and temperate zones.
Application
Red mulberry fruits are most often consumed fresh. In addition, wonderful jams and juices are made from them, and they are also frozen or dried. And fresh berries can be stored for no more than two days.
These delicious fruits will be a real boon for people with anemia, as they are endowed with the ability to increase not only the number of red blood cells, but also the total level of blood volume.
These berries will also serve well for immunity. It is especially useful to use them during the rehabilitation period after various ailments. And also red mulberry will become a reliable helper for people who are often stressed, as well as constant physical or mental stress.
In general, the beneficial properties of these fruits are similar to those of the white and black varieties of mulberry.
Contraindications
Contraindications to the use of this culture are similar to contraindications to the use of white mulberry. In the absence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus, juicy fruits can be consumed without any restrictions. However, in any case, everything is fine in moderation, especially since red mulberry is very high in calories. And in order to avoid digestive disorders, it is better to eat these berries at least half an hour before meals.
Growing and caring
Compared to white mulberry, red mulberry boasts a higher frost resistance, but in terms of other ecological characteristics, these species have a certain similarity. In the north of Belarus, this culture is still able to withstand frosts, but in the St. Petersburg latitudes it is already beginning to freeze.
