Treelike cotton plant (Latin Gossypium arboreum) - a perennial plant of the genus Cotton (Latin Gossypium) of the Malvaceae family (Latin Malvaceae). It is a shrub that grows up to two meters in height. Its large bowl-shaped flowers show the world magnificent dark purple petals, giving the shrub a noble appearance. Sometimes the petals are colored yellow, retaining the purple color only at their base, which does not diminish their charm. But the main value of this species of the genus Cotton plant is the long cotton fiber of the plant's fruit. There is a variety that is leading among all types of cotton in terms of tensile strength of cotton thread. From such threads, a thin and light fabric is obtained, competing with thin natural silk.
What's in your name
The specific Latin epithet "arboreum" is translated into Russian by the word "tree-like" and is obtained by the plant for the woody stems of the shrub.
Description
The tropics of India and Pakistan are considered to be the birthplace of the cotton plant. There is evidence that this type of Cotton plant was cultivated already during the Harappan civilization, which existed from the fourth to the middle of the second millennium BC in the valley of the Indus River, that is, at least five thousand years before our present day.
Treelike cotton is a shrub whose height, depending on habitat conditions, varies from one to two meters. The stems of the plant are protected by hairy pubescence and are colored purple.
The stems are a reliable support for the petioled leaves. The length of the petioles can be different, from one and a half to ten centimeters. At the base of the leaves are stipules, the shape of which is from linear to lanceolate, and sometimes stipules bend, turning into sickle-shaped. The shape of the leaf plate is from ovoid to round. The leaf has five to seven lobes and looks like a maple leaf. The edge of the leaf blade is often decorated with denticles. Glands are located on the central vein of the leaf plate (sometimes on the lateral veins). Young leaves often have pubescence, which disappears with age, making the leaf surface glossy.
The flowers of the plant are located on a short peduncle and have excellent protection, consisting of a "subdivision" and a small "cup". "Podchashie" (epicalix) consists of a series of stipules resembling sepals in appearance. Large segments of the "subdial" are ovoid with a cordate base and sharp tops, as well as a jagged edge, sometimes not too pronounced. The length of a true domed cup is only about five millimeters. Sepals end with five thin teeth.
The pictorial part of the flower is a corolla measuring from three to four centimeters. Corolla petals can be yellow with a purple center, and sometimes completely purple.
The fruit of the cotton plant is a three- or four-chambered seed capsule measuring one and a half to two and a half centimeters across. The capsule has an ovoid or oblong shape, and its curved surface is bare (that is, bald), with a "beak" at the end. Inside the capsule are spherical seeds covered with long white or yellowish cotton. The fabric made from this cotton is very high quality.
Usage
In East India (now Bangladesh), from a variety of Treelike Cottonseed with the name “Gossypium arboreum var. Neglecta "make a thin, lightweight fabric called" muslin ". The fineness of the fabric is achieved by the fact that the threads made from this type of Cotton have a high tensile strength, exceeding any other type of cotton.
