Plumeria obtus (lat. Plumeria obtusa) - deciduous, beautifully flowering shrub or tree of the genus Plumeria (Latin Plumeria), ranked in the Kutrovy family (Latin Apocynaceae). In addition to the fact that the plant is very decorative and effective, its flowers are used for food, enrich perfume with a floral aroma, and also use the plant for medicinal purposes.
What's in your name
The Latin name of the genus of beautifully flowering trees is consonant with the name of the explorer and botanist Charles Plumier, the French Franciscan monk, traveler, after whom the genus "Plumeria" is named.
The specific epithet "obtusa", which is translated from Latin into Russian by the word "blunt", is based on the shape of the leaves of this species, which have blunt tips, in contrast to the leaves of other species, which have sharp tips.
In addition to the official Latin name, this species also has “folk” names. It is commonly referred to as the "Pagoda tree" or "White frangipani".
Description
The Greater Antilles and Bahamas are considered the homeland of Plumeria, from where it successfully spread to tropical regions of the world. Today it can be found in any sunny resort on any continent.
The plant is a small, rounded tree or deciduous shrub. Plant height depends on environmental conditions and varies from three to five meters.
Narrow leaves have an obovate shape and a dark green shiny surface of the leaf plate. The length of the leaves can reach from four to twenty centimeters with a width of one to eight and a half centimeters. The tips of the leaves are blunt, which is what gave the name to the species. The leaves are arranged on petioles from one to four centimeters long. The surface of the leaf plate is leathery, sometimes filmy, glabrous. Such leaves are typical of many tropical plants that have to withstand the onslaught of tropical downpours. Water easily rolls off such a surface without damaging the sheet.
Dense, umbrella-shaped flower inflorescences appear from spring to autumn, but the most abundant flowering occurs in July-August. Inflorescences are formed by relatively large flowers. The fragrant tubular flowers are composed of five white petals with a bright yellow neck, forming a wheel-like corolla. The length of the flower tube is up to two centimeters, and the bend of the petals is from one and a half to four centimeters. The corolla is protected by a small calyx formed by ovoid-triangular sepals up to one and a half millimeters long. The stamens and pistil are one millimeter long. Anthers lanceolate, about three millimeters long. The diameter of the stigma of the pistil is up to two millimeters. That is, the size of the stamens and pistil is very scanty in comparison with the size of the corolla of the flower.
The fruit of Plumeria blunt is cylindrical pods with seeds inside, or a yellow-green leaflet. When grown in culture, pods are rarely formed.
Usage
In Hawaii, and in other places, dull Plumeria flowers are used to decorate rooms, fragrant wreaths are woven from flowers that decorate their homes, or used to decorate women, aroma is extracted from flowers for the production of perfumes. It is with the use of Plumeria flowers in perfumery that the common name of the plants "frangipani" is associated, which perpetuated in human memory the name of an Italian nobleman who lived in the sixteenth century and created a perfume with the scent of Plumeria.
The decorative appearance of the plant is popular in landscape design of territories where the climate allows Plumeria to survive and delight people with its beauty.
