One-petal peony (lat. Paeonia oxypetala) - a bright native of the Sichuan province, located in the south of the central part of the People's Republic of China. It also grows in natural conditions. It was introduced into culture in 1920. A rather rare species, it is rarely used in gardening.
Characteristics of culture
The one-petal peony is represented by perennial herbaceous plants with smooth stems up to 60 cm high, topped with dark green, unpuffed thin leaves that are papery to the touch. The upper foliage is different from the lower foliage. The second, in turn, is twice trifoliate, its lobes are elliptical or wedge-shaped with pointed silt blunt tips. The lobes, by the way, are quite long, the length varies from 8-16 cm. The flowers are medium, up to 10 cm in diameter, have a pale pink color. Petals obovate or oval, no more than 5-6 cm long. Flowering occurs in early - mid-May, fruits ripen in late August. However, the exact timing depends on the climatic conditions.
Cultural pests and how to deal with them
The one-petal peony, like many other members of the Peony family, is resistant to diseases and pests. But in rare years, for example, under unfavorable climatic conditions or lack of proper care, plants are attacked by harmful insects. Among them, one can note the green bronze - a beetle that lays eggs directly in the soil, especially enriched with manure. Beetles gobble up the foliage and petals of flowers, because of which the plants in the blink of an eye acquire a far from decorative appearance. Fighting green bronze is not easy, but quite possible. As a preventive measure, regular loosening and destruction of weeds is used, as a control - spraying with infusion of tomato tops.
No less dangerous for the single-petalled peony is the thin hop spider. Its caterpillar is capable of damaging the roots of the culture, thereby leading to stunting, and then death. The advantage of the one-petal peony is that they do not belong to whimsical plants, and caring for them is as simple as two and two. Watering is necessary regularly, but waterlogging is not encouraged. If the peonies get wet, this will lead to rotting of the root system, and therefore to inevitable death. For the same reason, peonies are not recommended to be planted in areas with a close occurrence of groundwater and in lowlands, where a huge amount of water accumulates after precipitation.
