Description
The fox sedge is a very bizarre herbaceous perennial that forms numerous tussocks. Its rhizomes, formed by slightly shortened internodes in the amount of four to five pieces, can reach three centimeters in diameter. And the brownish branchy roots often grow in length up to seventy-five centimeters. The stalks of fox sedge are rough, slightly thickened and narrow-winged. As a rule, their height ranges from half a meter to a meter.
The leaves of the beautiful plant, which are about 5-10 mm wide, are much shorter than the stems. And the membranous sides of the sheaths are usually purple-punctate or transversely wrinkled.
Rather dense brownish inflorescences of this beautiful representative of the plant world are distinguished by their spike-like shape. And sometimes they are bladed from below. These amusing paniculate inflorescences range in length from three to eight centimeters. Each inflorescence is formed by eight to fifteen ovate multi-flowered spikelets.
The rusty cover scales of the fox sedge are equipped with a greenish keel, endowed with a brownish, slightly rough and rather long awn. In most cases, these scales are slightly shorter than the sacs, although sometimes they are the same size. And the flat-convex narrow-ovate sacs, painted in brownish-brownish tones, are equipped with serrated truncated noses and rather ribbed veins. As for their length, it ranges from four and a half to six millimeters.
Fox sedge usually blooms in early June, and the process of fruiting starts closer to mid-July. The fruits of this plant are characterized by an elliptical shape and completely fill the sacs (their size is much smaller than the size of the sacs themselves).
Where grows
The fox sedge feels best in conditions of wet meadow and swamp-meadow moisture. Most often it can be seen on swamps and river banks - there it forms gorgeous thickets. However, this plant feels very good in damp forests and grooves.
The fox sedge is very widespread in the European part of Russia, as well as in Kazakhstan, Siberia, in the North of Europe and in the Caucasus.
Usage
Sedge fox is very willingly eaten by animals in the composition of hay, however, it must be mowed before flowering. In fresh form, representatives of the fauna do not eat it (extremely rarely, animals can taste only young specimens).
In addition, fox sedge is great for decorating medium-sized ponds made in a natural style. And she will also decorate large reservoirs perfectly.
Growing and caring
The soils intended for growing this moisture-loving beauty must be well aerated. The ideal option would be rich soils with a slightly acidic or neutral reaction. And it is recommended to plant sedge fox in the ground in containers.
This plant is not only very hygrophilous, but also incredibly photophilous. However, in partial shade, the fox will not wither too. If this representative of the flora grows in the open sun, then about once a week it needs to be watered.
Sedge propagation by fox occurs mainly by seeds that accumulate in the upper soil layers and are able to maintain their viability for several years. Seeds are usually sown in the spring. You can propagate this plant by dividing it - it is permissible to carry it out throughout the season.
The fox sedge does not require any special care. In addition, it boasts excellent frost resistance - it is not afraid of frosts up to twenty-three degrees! So there is absolutely no need to shelter her for the winter. And as soon as spring comes, it is necessary to cut off the old leaves of the plant.
