Periwinkle herbaceous belongs to a family called kutrovye. In Latin, the name of this plant sounds like this: Vinca herbacea Waldst. et Kit.

Description of herb periwinkle

Herb periwinkle is a perennial herb that has creeping and non-rooting shoots. At the same time, flowering shoots are ascending, and their length will be about thirty centimeters-one meter. The leaves of herbaceous periwinkle are very thin, even almost sessile, they will be rounded in shape, these leaves regularly fall off in the winter. The flowers of the plant are painted in purple tones and have a pubescent calyx. The fruits of the plant are curved and oblong.

The flowering of herbaceous periwinkle occurs in the period from May to June. This plant is found on the territory of the European part of Russia: namely, in the Black Sea, Lower Don and Volga-Don regions. Also, this plant can be found in Moldova, and in the Caucasus, and in Ukraine - in the Carpathians and the Dnieper region. In addition, herbaceous periwinkle grows on the territory of Crimea.

Under natural conditions, this plant grows on slopes, forest edges, meadows and among shrubs. In addition, in a number of cases, herbaceous periwinkle can be found both on chalk outcrops and in sparse forests, from the plain to the mid-mountain belts. Herb periwinkle is distinguished by especially advantageous decorative properties.

Description of the medicinal properties of herb periwinkle

For medicinal purposes, the herb, roots, leaves and flowers of herb periwinkle should be used. This plant has very valuable medicinal properties. Such healing properties are explained by the following composition of this plant: in herbaceous periwinkle there is a sufficient amount of alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, as well as organic acids such as malic, ursonic and succinic.

It has been proven that the extract of the roots of periwinkle herb is capable of providing atropine-like, hypotensive, antispasmodic, as well as anesthetic and hypoglycemic effects. In addition to this, the root extract also has the so-called protistocidal activity. A substance such as vincamine is characterized by very active sedative, antiarrhythmic, and also central muscle relaxant properties. It is also worth noting that in the aggregate, the entire content of alkaloids is capable of exhibiting very high antibacterial activity. The roots of herb periwinkle can become a beneficial source of the so-called uterine alkaloids, and besides this, also such alkaloids that will actively stimulate hematopoiesis and the activity of the central nervous system.

The herb periwinkle herb extract has cardiotonic, hypotensive and anesthetic effects. This extract is able to increase the amplitude of respiratory movements, and also causes bradycardia and myometrial spasm. An infusion made from herbal extract will have hypoglycemic properties.

As for akuammycin, it is able to stimulate respiration, and also has cardiotonic, analgesic and hypotensive effects. Whereas vincamayine will have antiarrhythmic properties. As for those preparations that are made on the basis of leaves, they will exhibit protistocidal activity.

In folk medicine, a decoction and infusion of the herb is actively used as an antispasmodic and hypoglycemic agent, as well as for dermatomycosis and with severe toothache. To prepare the broth, you will need to take one tablespoon of chopped herbs for one glass of boiling water, the resulting mixture should be infused for half an hour, and then it should be filtered.
