Elderberry herb (lat. Sambucus ebulus) - herbaceous plant; a representative of the elder genus of the Adoksovye family. Previously, the genus, which includes the species in question, was attributed to the Honeysuckle family, sometimes it was altogether isolated into a separate family called Elderberry. Other names are smelly elderberry, wild elderberry, stunted elderberry, greenery. In nature, plants can be found in forest-steppes, deciduous forests, as well as in the mountains in the Caucasus, the European part of Russia and some European countries.
The plant is poisonous, but despite this, it is actively used in folk medicine to treat various ailments. Moreover, leaves, berries and flowers of plants are used for medicinal purposes. By the way, the plant is poisonous due to the presence of amygdalin in all parts of the plants, especially fresh ones, which eventually transforms into hydrocyanic acid. Elderberry fruits are beautiful in appearance and have good taste characteristics, therefore they attract the attention of young children for whom these fruits are dangerous. Although some sources indicate that from the fruits of herbaceous elderberry, excellent tinctures and other alcoholic beverages are obtained, as well as sweet winter preparations, that is, jams, preserves and so on.
Characteristics of culture
Elderberry herb belongs to perennial herbaceous plants up to 1.5 m high with a straight stem. Leaves are petiolate, compound, pinnate, up to 20-22 cm long, consist of 9-11 oblong lanceolate leaves, pointed at the tips and serrated edges. The flowers are small, white, sometimes pinkish or reddish, collected in erect apical panicles, sit on long peduncles, have a specific, not entirely pleasant smell. Fruits are spherical, black, glossy, contain 3-4 seeds.
Herbaceous elderberry blooms in May - July, fruits ripen in August - September. In terms of external characteristics, the species in question is very similar to black elderberry, the only difference is in the smell emanating from flowers and leaves, and in the color of the anthers. Many gardeners consider this species a weed, and this is not surprising, because even during the Soviet Union it could be found on littered places, roadsides, in ravines, and also on the banks of streams. Elderberry herbaceous differs from its relatives by its powerful creeping stem.
Usage
As for the external characteristics, the scope of the considered species is similar to the black elderberry. Many gardeners do not pay due attention to this plant, and yet it has the most valuable properties. It's hard to imagine, but tinctures and teas from its roots, leaves and flowers boast blood-purifying, anticancer, anticancer and protective properties. They are often included in the complex treatment of throat diseases, diseases of the circulatory system and women's ailments, for example, fibroids, etc. They are also effective in the treatment of rheumatism, osteochondrosis, kidney disease, gout, arthritis, etc.
Since all parts of the elderberry herb are poisonous, they are used very carefully, keeping in mind the strict dosage. By the way, drugs are made from some parts of the plant, which are used to treat inflammation of the kidneys, heart disease and diseases of the abdominal cavity. In combination with other herbs, elderberry herb is used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus. It should be noted that any preparations, infusions and teas prepared on the basis of this plant should be used only after consulting your doctor. Elderberry herbal tea is used as an anti-cold, diaphoretic, sedative, expectorant and antipyretic agent.
Many healers advise using the flowers of the plant to treat diseases of the nose and ears, they are especially effective for otitis media, sinusitis and tonsillitis. But as mentioned above, it is very important to observe the dosage, otherwise serious complications are possible. Herbaceous elderberry leaves, or rather infusions and decoctions from them, are excellent astringents, diuretics and antipyretic agents. They can be used not only internally, but also externally, applying to wounds, burns, diaper rash and bruises. They can also relieve inflammation and irritation.
