Doronicum Columna (lat. Doronicum columnae) - one of the brightest and most common representatives of the Doronicum genus, reckoned with the Astrov family, or Compositae. In natural conditions, it grows in the mountains and forest zones of European countries, also lives in Turkey and Armenia. An attractive look, widely cultivated by modern gardeners and florists.
Plant characteristic
Doronicum Kolyumny is represented by flowering perennial plants up to 80 cm high, bearing a long tuberous root. As the culture grows, it forms small compact bushes, over which bright yellow inflorescences-baskets rise, pleasing with a rich color and pleasant appearance. Peduncles in the species under consideration are bare, although they may be slightly pubescent at the inflorescence, however, this phenomenon is rare.
The inflorescences-baskets are medium, can reach a diameter of no more than 6 cm. The ligulate flowers are narrow, in contrast to those that flaunt, for example, on the Austrian doronicum. The species boasts an abundant and long-lasting bloom that occurs in July, sometimes at the end of June. Repeated flowering, like in other members of the genus, is also possible.
Doronicum Kolyumna is drought-resistant, frost-hardy and unpretentious, although he needs regular care, otherwise it will bloom less richly and plentifully, in general, not at all the way any self-respecting florist would like to contemplate an abundance of flowers on his site and impress loved ones with this beauty friends and soul mates.
Use in the garden
Doronicum Kolyumny is suitable for decorating rocky gardens, alpine hills, rockeries and ordinary flowers. It also fits perfectly into a rustic garden. It looks great both in related groups, that is, in combination with representatives of the Astrov family, and with other cultivated plants, including ferns. It is not forbidden to combine Kolyumna's doronicum with Rogers, Shytitniks and Ostriches, they will also merge quite well together with decorative poppies and Volzhanks.
Pests and the fight against them
It should be noted that Kolyumna's doronicum is resistant to various pests, but in rare cases, especially under unfavorable conditions or insufficient care, it can be affected by aphids, weevils, scoops and rootworm nematodes. Of the listed pests for plants, weevils are the most dangerous. They are gray-black bugs, not exceeding 1-2 cm in size.
Weevils, like many other insects, devour foliage, but only at night, during the day they can be found under the foliage, it is there that their shelter is located. Over time, weevils begin to lay eggs, usually they carry out this process directly into the baskets or buds. Later, larvae hatch from them, which eat flowers at an incredible speed, especially their insides, as a result of which the baskets of doronicum fall off, a similar situation occurs with the buds.
Outwardly, the larvae of weevils are unremarkable, they are small white worms, it is not difficult to notice them on the bright yellow inflorescences of the doronicum. After about 25 days, the larvae of the weevils pupate, and later full-fledged beetles emerge from them, which continue to devour the plant, and hide in the soil for the winter. It is relatively simple to deal with a weevil, when the first signs are found, you must immediately start taking action, otherwise there will be no trace of flowering plants.
Insecticides are effective against weevils and their larvae. Processing is carried out 1 time within 4 weeks. Prevention is timely soil cultivation, removal of plant residues from the flower garden and their burning. Spraying with karbofos at the time of budding is encouraged.
Also, preventive measures include regular care, which consists in weeding of weeds, timely feeding and light loosening. Digging for the winter is not required, since the root system of Kolyumna's doronicum is located too close to the soil surface, and it can be inadvertently damaged, which will not affect plant health in the best way.
