Doronicum Austrian (lat. Doronicum austriacum) - a flowering culture actively used in gardening. Representative of the Doronicum genus, belonging to the Asteraceae family, or Astrovye. In nature, the species in question is found in the Balkans, as well as in the mountains and foothills of mountains located in European countries. Doronicum Austrian is one of the brightest representatives of the genus, it will fit into almost any flower garden.
Characteristics of culture
Doronicum Austrian is represented by perennial herbaceous plants that form erect, branched stems during growth, densely covered with pubescent succulent foliage. Leaves of two types - stem and root. The first are long, oblong, sharp at the tips, narrowed at the base; the latter are ovoid, petiolar, blunt at the ends, heart-shaped at the base.
Inflorescences in the form of baskets with a diameter of not more than 8 cm, consist of tubular and ligulate flowers of yellow color (tubular flowers are pale yellow). Baskets in the amount of 10-12 pieces, in turn, are collected in large shields. Flowering of Austrian Doronicum is observed in early - mid-summer, that is, in June - July. The exact timing depends on the climatic zone. Flowering lasts about a month.
The species in question can be safely attributed to the category of frost-resistant crops, it tolerates frosts down to -30C without any problems. Lower temperatures can kill plants, but good shelter and thick snow can prevent this from happening. If the weather forecast promises severe cold for the winter, the plants should be carefully insulated, then in subsequent years they will delight their owners with a sunny mood, because the inflorescences of the culture look like real radiant suns.
Subtleties of reproduction
Austrian Doronicum is propagated most often by dividing the bush. This method does not cause difficulties, and is subject to even a novice gardener and florist. The division of the doronicum is recommended to be carried out at least and not more often than 1 time in 3-5 years, it is by this moment that the curtains thin out and lose their former decorative effect. The division can be carried out both in spring and in autumn. Division is not prohibited in the summer and even during flowering, but in this case, the division should not be left without a clod of earth. Actually, it is necessary to plant them in a new place immediately.
Doronicum also reproduce by seed. By the way, every year plants give a large number of seeds that remain viable for 2 years. For the species under consideration, both the seedling method and sowing in open ground are applicable. Both methods give good results, although with seedlings, the plants bloom much faster. Sowing dates largely depend on the climatic zone, for example, in central Russia, sowing in the ground is carried out in the first - second decade of May. Seedlings appear amicably, as a rule, 7-10 days after sowing. When planting seedlings in the ground, a distance of 25-30 cm is observed.
Care features
Doronicum Austrian, like other representatives of the genus, cannot be called demanding plants to care for. They only need regular and moderate watering, as well as soil mulching. In general, the species in question is drought-resistant, all thanks to thick rhizomes, which are able to store enough moisture for nutrition and growth. But prolonged drought does not affect the development and condition of the plant in the best way, therefore it is very important to monitor the level of moisture in the soil. The culture also has a negative attitude to waterlogging, an excess of moisture cannot be allowed, otherwise the plants will begin to rot and die, without revealing their beauty.
Mulching for the Austrian Doronicum plays an important role. Firstly, this procedure protects plants from hateful weeds, and secondly, it prevents rapid evaporation of moisture. Natural material, including sawdust, can be used as mulch. Do not forget about top dressing. Doronicum treats them positively. It is recommended to apply mineral fertilizers in early spring or at the time of active development and formation of baskets. Immediately after flowering, the stems of the plants are pruned, otherwise the curtains will spoil the appearance of the flower garden with withered foliage.
