Delphinium brachycentrum (lat. Delphinium brachycentrum) - one of the rare representatives of the Delphinium genus, belonging to a large family called Buttercup. In nature, the species under consideration is found on the Kuril and Commander Islands, as well as in the Arctic and Alaska. Typical habitats are rocky areas. The cultivated species is cultivated infrequently, despite its high decorative properties.

Characteristics of culture

Delphinium short-spur is represented by perennial herbaceous plants up to 30 cm high with pubescent densely leafy stems bearing heart-shaped green leaves cut into 3 lobes. The flowers are quite large (when compared with other members of the genus), blue, there are also varieties with a cream color. The flowers, by the way, are equipped with a perianth, the leaves of which do not exceed 3-3.5 cm in length. It should be noted that the flowers are collected in a few-flowered racemose inflorescences. The flowering of the short-spur delphinium is observed in early July - mid-August.

The species is winter-hardy, perfectly tolerates winters without shelter. It is resistant to pests and diseases, although in the absence of proper care, waterlogging and unfavorable conditions for plant cultivation, this is quite possible. In order to prevent damage and spread, it is very important to properly care for the plants, and when the first signs are found, start active actions. Despite the fact of rarity, the short-spur delphinium has a place to be in personal backyards and summer cottages, it is suitable for decorating rocky gardens and the outskirts of garden paths.

Landing features

It is recommended to plant short-spur delphinium in areas with moderately moist, neutral, drained, loose soil. On acidic soils, preliminary liming is required, on poor soils - the introduction of fertilizers, both organic and complex mineral fertilizers. You should not plant crops on sites with dense, saline and waterlogged soils, they will not like them, the delphinium will feel defective on them, which will affect its decorative effect.

Before planting, the soil is thoroughly treated, rotted manure, humus or compost are introduced, then superphosphate, potassium salt and ammonium sulfate. The exact amount of fertilization depends on the nutrient level of the soil. Moreover, the primary treatment should be done in the fall, and the secondary treatment in early spring. At the same time, holes are formed, which are half laid with soil mixed with humus. Do not forget about the drainage layer; coarse river sand can act as drainage. It is covered with a mixture of humus and soil.

Planting seedlings, namely the seedling method is the most common, should be in slightly cloudy weather, at first the seedlings need shading. Bright rays of the sun can harm the still immature plants. We must not forget about hydration. Watering should be regular and moderate, so the short-spur delphinium will take root faster. By the way, this fact also depends on the weeding. Weeds, by the way, take away from delphiniums most of the nutrients and moisture required for normal development and growth.

Care steps

In addition to watering and weeding, the short-spur delphinium needs additional feeding, they affect both the development and the abundance of flowering. Neglect of top dressing promises weak flowering and growth retardation, it can also cause frequent diseases and the invasion of a huge number of pests, which are sometimes very difficult to get rid of, and with untimely intervention it is completely impossible.

Top dressing is carried out three times per season: in spring - complex fertilizers and organic matter, before flowering - phosphorus-potassium, after flowering - similar to spring. And another important care action is cutting off shoots after flowering. Shelter is not required, but if a harsh snowless winter is expected, the cut off "stumps" of the shoots should be covered with a thick layer of dry foliage.
