Short-leaved asparagus (lat. Asparagus brachyphyllus) - not the most common species of the genus Asparagus. In nature, it is found on the territory of Russia, namely in Transbaikalia, as well as in the north of China and Mongolia. Typical habitats are solonetzic meadows, coastal zones of salt lakes, river valleys and steppe. Protected species, included in the Red Book of Russia. The discoverer of the species is considered to be the Russian botanist Turchaninov, it was he who described the plant back in 1840.

Characteristics of culture

Short-leaved asparagus is represented by perennial herbaceous plants, not exceeding 30 cm in height. They are characterized by straight and smooth stems, which are endowed with a special taste and juiciness. Plants are not deprived of thin hair-like cladodia, collected in bunches.

The flowers are small, white in color, equipped with a perianth, the lobes of which have a thin green strip. Short-leaved asparagus blooms in spring, usually in May. The fruits are represented by globular brown berries, as a rule, they have a bluish bloom. The culture enters fruiting in July, however, the timing may vary depending on climatic conditions.

It should be noted that short-leaved asparagus does not have real foliage, more precisely, it is represented by blendes - green needle-shaped branches previously indicated as cladodia. While the leaves are called phylloclades, they, in turn, are represented by filmy scales.

Short-leaved asparagus is an unpretentious plant. It develops easily even on saline soils, which causes some misunderstanding and interest among Russian and foreign scientists. Nowadays, numerous experiments are underway on short-leaved asparagus, breeders are trying to get new unpretentious varieties that will delight you with excellent taste.

Features of the view

It is known that in the composition of short-leaved asparagus, and in other representatives of the genus, there is a large amount of aspartic acid. She, by the way, is one of the amino acids that are part of the proteins of animals and plants. Also, aspartic acid is involved in vital processes in our body, including the proper functioning of the brain.

When asparagus is consumed, aspartic acid is quickly broken down and excreted in the urine, and therefore it acquires a rather specific smell, but not in all people, because each organism is individual. This aspect is due to the fact that aspartic acid is broken down to sulfur compounds, which have such a peculiar smell. Nowadays, breeders are working to create varieties with a minimum content of aspartic acid in order to eliminate an unpleasant odor when urinating.
