Deutzia rough, or star-shaped (lat.deutzia scabra) - an ornamental shrub of the genus Deytsia of the Hortensia family. It occurs naturally in China and Japan. The plant got its name for the rough leaves, covered over the entire surface with small hairs.
Characteristics of culture
The action is rough, or star-shaped - a deciduous shrub up to 2.5 m high with gray-brown or reddish-brown shoots. Leaves are dull, green, ovate or oblong-ovate, rough-pubescent, up to 8 cm long. In autumn, the foliage acquires a yellow-brown or golden-yellow color. The flowers are pinkish, light crimson, lilac, carmine or white, star-shaped, collected in erect narrow paniculate inflorescences.
Today, varieties with double flowers are presented in nurseries, they are distinguished by abundant flowering, often the shoots cannot withstand the weight of numerous flowers and bend, as a result, the plants acquire a weeping shape. There are varieties with variegated leaves.
The action is rough, or star-shaped thermophilic, cannot boast of resistance to frost. In the conditions of the Moscow region, it hibernates only under cover, otherwise it freezes heavily. The crop blooms in July-August, the fruits ripen in October. Easily propagated by seeds and cuttings. The rough action blooms in the third year after planting.
Growing conditions
The action is rough, or star-shaped, quite demanding on growing conditions. It develops best on soils rich in mineral and organic substances with moderate moisture. Drained, light, loose, water and air permeable substrates are suitable for growing crops, the content of lime is not prohibited. The location is preferably sunny, a light openwork shade will not harm, but in this case the plants will not please with abundant flowering.
Reproduction
The action is propagated by rough, or star-shaped, seeds and vegetatively (green and lignified cuttings, layering and root suckers). Sowing seeds is carried out in the spring without preliminary preparation. Seeds are scattered over the soil surface without embedding, lightly pressing against the soil surface.
Seedlings appear in 3-4 weeks. Seedlings dive in the phase of 3 true leaves. For the winter, seedlings need shelter. Young plants are transplanted to a permanent place in the second year. Green cuttings are no less effective for action. Cuttings are cut in the middle of summer. For rooting, they are planted in greenhouses with light breathable nutrient soil.
Care
The action is rough, or star-shaped, it is hard to tolerate heat and prolonged drought, it needs abundant and regular watering during these periods without waterlogging. In a typical summer, shrubs are watered 1-3 times a month at the rate of 15-20 liters per 1 adult plant. The culture responds well to loosening, weeding and feeding. Mulching is optional, but encouraged, especially for young specimens.
Pruning is carried out immediately after flowering, this procedure promotes better growth and active development. Rejuvenating and thinning pruning is also periodically carried out. Thickening should not be allowed. Hedges do not cut their action. For the winter, the shrubs are bent to the soil surface, covered with spruce branches or other non-woven modern material.
Ideal for fertilizing: slurry, phosphorus, potash and nitrogen fertilizers. Mineral fertilizers are applied after pruning and at the end of summer, organic fertilizers - in early spring. Rough or stellate action is rarely affected by pests and diseases, but preventive treatments with natural infusions are desirable.
Usage
The action is rough, or star-shaped - a beautifully flowering culture, which is why it has been widely used in ornamental gardening. It is used to create various landscape compositions. The plant is perfect for forming hedges and curbs.
Action looks great in both single and group landings. Lilacs, hydrangea, weigela and other flowering shrubs, as well as fan maple, Thunberg barberry, white mulberry, chaenomeles and leather skumpia can become allies of the plant. Herbaceous plants and flower crops, such as geykhera, buzulniki and doronicum, add zest to abundantly flowering compositions.
