It is impossible to propagate a rose by seeds - the breeding qualities will be lost. But knowing the rules of grafting or grafting, you can arrange a rose garden yourself. When using rosehip for rootstock, you will get a plant resistant to diseases and optimized by the climatic conditions of your area. Budding is the most acceptable breeding method, almost always giving 100% survival rate. Let's talk more about summer vaccination
When can you plant a rose on a rosehip
In summer, roses are grafted during the period of plant activity and good sap flow - this is July-August. At this time, the bark perfectly separates from the wood, which increases the chance of survival and the successful completion of the enterprise. The vaccination procedure can also be carried out in the spring (April-May) and even in winter.
Choosing a rosehip for rootstock
An important point for grafting and the further development of the plant is the correct choice of the rosehip variety. To ensure further frost resistance, choose a wrinkled or prickly rose. These varieties are the most persistent and unpretentious, although they create difficulties with their abundance of thorns. It is better to give preference to the rose of May or ordinary (rose hips Rosa canina). They also have good winter hardiness, low thorniness and a long root collar. In any case, the requirements for rosehip stock are as follows:
• intensive growth;
• duration of the growing season;
• abundant fruiting;
• resistance to disease, drought;
• weak formation of root growth.
Growing rosehip stock
High-quality grafting material is obtained by self-cultivation. Collect fully ripe fruits (brown) from the selected variety. Clean and place in a container with wet sand, leave in the refrigerator until sowing.
It is necessary to sow in October directly into the ground. The seedlings are ready next fall. For sorting, dig out, select the best specimens, with a well-marked root collar, and plant in a permanent place. Before this, the roots are pruned, leaving 15 cm, the above-ground shoots are truncated to 10. "Stock babies" are distributed on the garden bed with a step of 20 cm. The deepening is done by raising the neck above the surface of the soil horizon. The next year, the wilds are ready for vaccination, which is performed in the middle lane from July 15 to August 20.
Choosing a good graft
The mother bush of the rose must be at least three years old. Ripe and strong shoots are selected for reproduction. It is desirable that by this time the flowering is over.
Branches for rootstock are used with matured dense wood, at least 1 cm in diameter. For grafting, cut off the middle part, on which the bark has a smooth, shiny surface, such specimens take root better. For budding, you need only one, the most fertile bud.
Rose grafting or budding technology
The vaccination process is not complicated and everyone can do it. You need to work quickly using a sharp instrument or an eyepiece knife. The manipulation takes place in several stages.
First, we start preparing the rose hips. Clean the root collar from the soil, wipe with a dry cloth, make a T-shaped cut on the trunk, preferably on the east / west side. Then at the stem of the scion (rose), cut off the most developed bud together with the bark, the length should be about 3 cm. For reference: the bud is in the leaf axil. Next, the wood is carefully removed, as a result, the bud should remain on a piece of bark.
Bend part of the bark on the rose hip at the incision site, the scion should be shortened so that you can easily insert it under the bark of the rose hip. Now place the scion eye on the exposed part of the branch. Only the bud remains outside, and the bark goes into the rootstock. Close the bark, press firmly and secure with electrical tape. The root collar is covered with a layer of soil and watered.
The peephole remains open and is slightly sprinkled with soil, and watered once a week. The adaptation process takes place within a month, after which one can judge about a successful operation. A not shriveled or darkened kidney is a sign of success. If you see a brown bud, try again, following the same pattern, making a cut just below the previous vaccination.
The vegetation of the grafted bud will begin only in the next season. In early spring, in order to avoid active growth, the top of the shoot should be cut off (cut off) 2 cm above the grafted bud. The next year, a full-fledged, adapted rose bush will begin to develop.
