Almost all summer residents want to hide their possessions from prying eyes. Stone, iron, concrete fences remove us from the nature to which we are striving. A hedge, on the other hand, has a beneficial effect on our emotions and health. Rosehip is ideal for these purposes, it is unpretentious, beautiful and useful. Let's talk about the advantages, suitable varieties and planting schemes
Why choose a rosehip for a hedge?
Rosehip planting looks incredibly beautiful in all seasons. People call it "wild rose". Blooming can continue until mid-July, filling your garden with scent. A bush with bright fruits will delight you until winter. Everyone knows about the nutritional, vitamin and medicinal properties of rose hips.
The ability of rose hips to form dense thickets is relevant for fences. The thorny shrub has a paired thorn on the branches, and needle-like bristles on the leaves, grows up to 3 meters, providing complete obstruction.
Once you plant a hedge, you never need to plant and renew it. Rosehip rejuvenates on its own due to root growth. A wild rose hedge has many benefits:
• Unpretentiousness to cultivation conditions and soil, • Decorativeness of buds and fruits, • Useful properties of fruits, roots, leaves, • Resistance to freezing and drought, • Does not require maintenance, • Pruning is done once a year, • Reliably protects the territory from animals and thieves, • Durability and self-healing, • High density - obstruction to wind, exhaust gases,
• Resistance to infections and fungal diseases, • Useful fruits, • Not affected by pests.
Choosing a rosehip for a hedge
In the nursery or on the market, you can easily find the right sort of seedlings. You can save money: dig up a rose hip from your neighbors, in the forest - anywhere. Many sow with seeds or root cuttings from a bush they like. This is done at the end of June. The cut contains 3-4 buds, quickly takes root under cover. Varietal characteristics are only important for the quality of the fruit and the variety of inflorescences. For protective functions, the appearance does not matter.
The forms growing in Russia (about 100 varieties) differ in height and shape of the fruit (spherical, flattened, elongated). The color range of inflorescences is quite diverse: from pale cream, yellow, to rich burgundy. The size of the buds is 2-10 cm, some have increased doubleness.
The most popular varieties for the "green fence" are considered to be Geisha rosehip, Rusty, Dog, Brown, Maisky, Tambovchanka, Hansaland. By choosing hybrid varieties, you will get long flowering and bountiful harvests. Almost all varieties bear fruit in the third year. Flowering occurs in June, with a duration of three weeks.
Planting a rose hip for a hedge
Choose the time to create a hedge before the foliage begins to bloom, October will be a good period. It is better to take seedlings of two to three years of age. Plan your spot before planting. Mark the stretched rope. If you want a thick and wide hedge, then plant in two rows. Make holes in increments of 60-80 cm (more often), deepening 50. The width is maintained at about 40-50. Planting density - 5 bushes are enough per running meter.
Rosehip does not like excess moisture, so if the place is low with stagnant water, drain it. To speed up the growing season, add nutritious soil to the finished wells: put two tablespoons of potassium sulfate and a glass of superphosphate on the compost bucket. With this mass, fill in the prepared pits by a third.
Before planting seedlings, it is recommended to shorten the roots, leaving 15-20 cm. After that, apply a clay talker, preferably with a growth stimulator. When planting 5-6 cm, deepen the root collar. Further, abundant watering: a bucket per bush.
Given the ability of the dog rose to give active root shoots, you can immediately take action - to make a restriction along the planting. For these purposes, trimming of corrugated board, old slate, thick plastic will come in handy. For deepening, 50 cm is enough.
Rosehip hedge care
The unpretentiousness of this plant delights lovers of quiet rest. Indeed, only in the first year you need to weed in the summer so that tall weeds do not deprive your kids of sunlight and water if the weather is dry for a long time.
In the second year, a shortening haircut will be required. Each branch is truncated by 1/3, this activates the growth of lateral shoots and contributes to an increase in dense density and volume.
The annual shearing of the rose hips takes place after shedding the foliage in the fall. It is advisable to use electric shears, but you can do with pruning shears. Old and dry branches are cut out. Common forms for rosehip hedges are rectangular and trapezoidal. To rejuvenate the landing strip, you need to leave young shoots 2-3 from the bush. In four years, a blooming and fruiting wild rose fence will be a bright decoration of your site and a source of vitamins.
