In the fall, the gardener has a lot of worries - to whitewash the trees, rake the foliage from the site and take out the garbage, "mothball" the house and outbuildings, roll up the cans with the harvest, make a couple of barbecues to close the season … Do not forget that in the fall you can pick up and plant flowers for the garden that you would like to see in the flower garden next spring. Let's think together what flowers you could plant in your summer cottage in the fall
Why is it profitable to plant flowers in autumn?
Planting flowers in the fall has several advantages. The first plus is that the seeds that survived the winter will be really strong, fortified, with the resulting immunity against diseases.
Seeds that survived wintering perfectly withstand spring frosts, sprout well, and are endowed with special strength. Do an experiment. Plant the same flower seeds in the fall, the other part in the spring. Then watch. The former will survive both garden diseases and unexpected cold snaps, while the plants planted in spring will be destroyed by the very first night frost in May.
Also, in the spring, you don't have to mess around with the plants planted in the fall. They have already been planted and it remains only to wait for their shoots and rapid flowering.
Planting annuals in autumn
To plant the seeds of annuals in the fall in a flower garden, you need to select frost-resistant species that will survive both in winter and in the spring cold. It is necessary to plant annuals in frozen ground, since if you plant annuals in still warm soil in the fall, you risk causing their untimely germination.
Determine where to plant your annual flowers. The soil in this place should not be in direct sunlight, which in winter can melt the snow, and at the same time the bright sun rays will literally burn this place.
You also need to understand what will be in the spring at this place. If there is a lot of thawed spring water, plant seeds can be washed away by them.
Sow the seeds thicker than if you did it in the spring. They need to be sown in late autumn after a good freezing of the top layer of the soil. By this time, from the beginning of autumn, the land should be dug up in a flower garden and fertilized.
Spread the seeds into the furrows. Pour small seeds into grooves one cm deep, larger ones up to five cm deep. Cover the seeds with a layer of humus, sand, or you can mix peat with sand.
When the crops sprout in the spring, you can, firstly, see how abundantly and amicably they rose, and secondly, they should be thinned out if they rose densely.
Sowing of annual flowers can be done in December, when the snow falls. To do this, in place in September of the dug earth and fertilized, if the snow cover has reached 25 cm on it, make the following movements. You trample the snow well, sow the seeds on it in rows or make the required pattern out of them. Above is a layer of soil mixture (see above). And again you need to sprinkle everything with a layer of snow and carefully trample it down.
Among the recommended annuals that can be planted in autumn and winter, we recommend paying attention to:
• chrysanthemum (keeled)
• phlox
• fragrant mignonette
• malcolmia seaside
• Snapdragon
• poppy
• cosme
• Iberis
• Chinese carnation
• medicinal calendula
• annual cornflower
• Chinese aster
• adonis and others.
Planting perennial flowers in autumn
The same can be said about perennial flowers for planting in autumn and winter. But their difference will be that they will give (subject to healthy fresh seeds) stronger and more abundant shoots than annual crops.
Perennials, many biologists believe, should be specially planted in the fall, and not in the spring. In order for the seeds planted in autumn to sprout together in spring and give flowering, please note that they must belong to the express varieties of perennial flowers. These are the ones that will bloom in the first year after planting. Other species of perennials will perfectly harden in the soil during the winter, improve their health, but will bloom only next year.
Perennials also need to be planted in frozen ground. The principle of planting perennial flowers does not differ from annuals. We remind you to compact the soil lightly after planting.
In the spring, when snow melts from crops, cover them with foil. But as soon as they rise, remove the film immediately. In spring, they dive on 3-4 leaves of plants.
You can plant such perennials with express germination in your summer cottage. Take a note:
• rudbeckia
• primrose
• lupine
• oriental poppy
• bell
• alpine aster
• gypsophila
• geyheru and many others.
