Repairing a metal roof is an important part of taking care of your country house or summer cottage.

What is metal roofing?

Sheet materials are called metal tiles, which have the ability to imitate the pattern of natural tiles in their finished form. Due to the fact that there is an increase in the size of the elements of this material, there is a reduction in the number of joints, which entails savings in labor costs.

Sheets of metal tiles can be made both on an aluminum base and on a galvanized steel base. This process includes roll forming and stamping. In the course of production, the surface of the material just acquires a clear pattern, equipped with the same folds and grooves.

In the production of metal tiles, both ordinary steel and galvanized steel, which has a paint-and-lacquer coating, can be used. Such tiles must be made of hot-dip galvanized steel, their thickness is 0.5 millimeters. During the manufacturing process, the steel is passivated, then primed and covered with a layer of colored plastic, which is a durable coating. Such a coating is highly resistant to impact and corrosion, as well as to chemical attack.

The weight of metal tiles will be six times less than the weight of natural tiles. The length of the sheets is 0.4 - 8 meters, and the thickness is 0.4 - 0.6 millimeters, while the width will be 1.1 meter. The sheets must be placed on a roof with a slope of at least twelve degrees. The shingles are attached to the lathing by means of special self-tapping screws, which are also resistant to corrosion; you do not need to drill additional holes either. It is recommended to overlap the sheets. A convenient property of a metal tile will be that it can be laid on a wood roof that was previously used. However, the metal tile has a very low level of sound insulation.

Metal roofing can be painted in various colors, most often in this case, they choose red, brown or gray.

Due to the fact that the elements of the roof are much smaller in size, the material will be consumed very economically. Overlapping elements should be laid to prevent leaks from the roof when it rains heavily.

Many people specially order special sheets, the length of which will be in full accordance with the roof slope.

The metal tile has a rather low weight, therefore, such a roof does not require a solid foundation, which is a prerequisite for ceramic tiles. Installation of a roof made of metal tiles does not require much effort, and the technology itself will be quite simple.

Tips for repairing a metal roof

If a roof made of such a material leaks, then the reason lies in the fact that mistakes were made during installation. If you find some scratches and other flaws on such a roof, then in order to prevent corrosion, the roof should be covered with a special paint. All gaps between the metal and the gutter elements must be filled with silicone sealant.

If through holes appear, then you can apply a patch using a soldering iron, or change the entire sheet, in the case when there are a lot of such flaws.

Poor-quality fasteners can also loosen, then the rubber washers will collapse just a few years after the coating was assembled. Here it is better not to resort to pull-ups, but immediately start installing new bindings.

When the roof was made incorrectly almost completely, then a more serious reconstruction will be required. Insulated pitched roofs often start to leak, which is due to the use of low-quality perforated films. It is recommended to replace such a film and select a special diffusion membrane. This membrane must be applied to the insulation, which will protect it from moisture. To carry out such a repair, the entire cover must be removed.
